The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among mothers' self-directed learning ability and learning involvement perceived by their children, and children's self-directed learning ability. Two hundred fifty three sixth graders(male, 121; female, 132) participated in this study. The questionnaires to measure mothers' self-directed learning ability and learning involvement perceived by their children, and children's self-directed learning ability were administered to these children.
The major findings are summarized as follows: first, the higher group in mothers' self-directed learning ability showed children's self-directed learning ability significantly higher than the lower group in mothers' self-directed learning ability; second, the higher group in mothers' learning involvement showed children's self-directed learning ability significantly higher than the lower group in mothers' learning involvement; and third, the higher group in mothers' involvement showed children's self-directed learning ability significantly higher than the lower group in mothers' learning involvement, even at the same level of mothers' self-directed learning ability.
These results indicate that mothers' self-directed learning and learning involment are very important for developing children's self-directed learning ability.
