The purpose of this study was to examine the impacts of REBT group counseling on school children and to help improve academic guidance in educating sector.
The subjects in this study were 38 fourth and fifth graders from two different elementary schools in G-gun, south Jeolla province. 19 students who attended D elementary school, for which this researcher has worked, were selected as an experimental group, and the other students from J elementary school, whose family and local environments were similar to those of the experimental group, were chosen as a control group.
A pretest, posttest and retention test were conducted to compare the experimental group and control group, and REBT group counseling and learned helplessness were respectively selected as an independent variable and a dependent variable.
After the experiment was fulfilled, the scores of the two groups in learned helplessness were analyzed to acquire statistical data on mean and standard deviation, and variance analysis was employed to see if the two groups were equivalent. To determine how REBT group counseling affected their learned helplessness, posttest and retention test were implemented, and then ANCOVA was utilized to analyze the test results.
The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, there was a more alleviation in the learned helplessness of the experimental group that was involved in REBT group counseling than that of control group that wasn't.
Second, when the subfactors of their learned helplessness were investigated, there were statistically significant gaps among each group's pretest, posttest and retention test scores in poor confidence, depression/ negative cognition, passiveness, shortage of durability and lack of exhibitionism, but no statistically significant intragroup disparity was found among their test scores in lack of control and shortage of responsibility.
