The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of parents' child-rearing attitudes perceived by the adolescents on self-esteem, children's interpersonal relations and academic achievements. To meet the goal of this study, the following research questions were put forth:
1. What kind of effects do parent's child-rearing attitudes have on the self-esteem of adolescents?
2. What kind of effects do parent's child-rearing attitudes have on the interpersonal relations of adolescents?
3. What kind of effects do parents's child-rearing attitudes have on the academic achievements of adolescents?
A survey was conducted among 338 second -year students( male 169, female 169) in K middle school located in Jeonnam Suncheon. For this study, the questionnaires were designed by Oh Sung-sim, Lee Jong-seung(1982) to examine parents' child-rearing attitudes , by Kang Jong-gu(1986) to examine self-esteem and by Sin Man-chul (1993) to examine interpersonal relations were performed.
In this study, SPSS 12.0 was used to analyze the correlation and regression of the relationship between parental child-rearing attitudes and the self-esteem of adolescents and the interpersonal relations and academic achievements.
The findings of this study indicted the followings:
First, as a result of examining the effects of parents' child rearing-attitudes on the self-esteem of the adolescents, it was determined that the affection-variable is highly correlated and the effects of the mother's rearing attitudes are higher than the father's.
Second , as a result of examining the effect of parents' child rearing-attitudes on interpersonal relations, it was determined that the achievement -variable is highly correlated and the effects of the father's rearing attitudes are higher than the mother's.
Third, as a result of examining the effect of parents' child rearing attitudes on academic achievements , it was determined that the achievement-variable is highly correlated and the effects of the father's rearing attitudes are higher than the mother's.
Lastly, self-esteem is more affected by parents' child rearing-attitudes than the other two factors are-interpersonal relation, academic achievement .
In conclusion, as the result of examining the effects of parents' child-rearing attitudes on self-esteem, children's interpersonal relations and academic achievements, positive factors of parents' child-rearing attitudes such as affection, autonomy, rationality, achievement have positive and meaningful correlations.
Through the results of this research, we know that parents' child-rearing attitudes have a significant influence on self-esteem, children's interpersonal relations and academic achievements. According to the results, parents should cultivate positive child -rearing attitudes . Besides, both roles of parents are important in raising their adolescent child and cooperation between parents in raising a child is necessary.
