In the 21th century, the epicenter of the society itself is shifting to the knowledge and culture. For this reason the importance of the art education is higher than ever, with particularly more attention paid to the development of creative thinking. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of the development of a dancing program over the creative thinking of the students at elementary schools.
The researches in this study were conducted in the following manners:
As the experimental subjects for this study, 15 female students from higher grades (4th ~ 6th grade) in Y elementary school in Yongin, Kyounggi-do were selected and designated as the test group, while 15 other students of higher grades (4th ~ 6th grade) from P Study Center in Kyounggi-do were selected and designated as the control group. For the period from September 2nd till October 28th, a creative dancing program was conducted with 2 sessions a week, giving 16 hours worth of activities per week. The influence of the program to the creative thinking of the students was measured by using the
TTCT Model-based questionnaire by Torrance. The research was conducted in the following order, namely the preliminary study, experimental activities, and the afterward reviewing. The processing of the collected data was done using SPSS 14.0 for Windows. We used the t-test approach to examine the differences between the test group and the control group before and after the creative dancing program, with the significance level set at p<.05.
As a result of the above said study, we could reach the following conclusions:
First, one of the factors in the creative thinking, the proficiency showed improvement. This indicates that proficiency, which is the ability to find solutions by using as many ideas as possible, was truly improved as a result of the experiment.
Second, another factor for the creative thinking, the originality, was also enhanced as a result of the creative dancing program. This in turn indicates that the quality of originality, or the ability to produce unique ideas by breaking out of the conventional system of thinking and exploring an alternative world of expressions and movements, was also improved as a result of the program.
Third, the abstractness of the title, which is yet another factor of the creative thinking, also increased after conducting the creative dancing program. The quality of the abstractness, ability for generic expression by picking up the features and qualities of things, also turned out to be improved by the dancing program.
Fourth, the creative dancing program on the elementary school students appeared to contribute to the enhancement of the elaborateness, yet another factor of the creative thinking. The dancing program includes a process of building up more delicate capability of expression by evocating and imagining various objects and animals, and it is believed that such a tendency is the root of the enhancement of the elaborateness.
Fifth, it appeared that the creative dancing program did not have any statistically significant effects on the resistance against rash closure. We believe that such a result is caused by the fact that contents of the classes focused on the improvisational expressions such as Bongsan Talchum.
As a conclusion of this study, it was found that the creative dancing program did have positive influences over the creative thinking of the elementary school students. Therefore, the development of creative dancing programs by using a variety of materials that could be applied to the actual education practice will certainly contribute to the enhancement of creative thinking ability of our children.
