The performance places in Korea are concentrated in Daehangno, and domestic and foreign performances are held throughout the year, including dramas, dances, musicals, etc. Daehangno, known as the Mecca of Korean performance art, has led the trend of our performing arts. Thus, it has also been known to domestic and foreign producers as the market place of performing arts and as the area for the production and distribution of performing arts.
The purpose of this thesis is to study the local economic impact of Daehangno's performing arts in order to contribute to making a better policy of performing arts. For this reason, this study analyzes the local economic impact directly and indirectly through input·output analysis with the model of 'Economic Analysis and Vitalization on Art and Culture (1996)' by the Institute of Industry Research.
Since there were no preceding empirical studies, the actual running of Daehangno's performances and the average consumption of audiences must have been assumed with the survey. The local economic impact has been analyzed with the induction coefficient of input·output analysis. As a result of the analysis, the amount of consumption per capita is ₩50,611 on average. Among the gross consumption, 81.9% is spent on the admission fee and a meal.
The survey on performance halls shows that at this moment there are 121 performance halls in Daehangno, which are usually furnished with 161 seats, and the gross annual spectators is 3,241,860 people.
As a result of the analysis on economic impact, the direct economic impact is estimated at ₩221,000,000,000, the indirect impact of production induction is ₩393,400,000,000, and the induction impact for added value is ₩196,700,000,000. The whole induction impact will be ₩196,700,000,000 in total and the induction impact for employment is also estimated at 4,949 people, according to the survey.
This study expects to help in making better policies for performing arts in that it will suggest the economic impact on this particular area with the measuring analysis and without the use of alternative figures, and it will suggest the direct and indirect economic impact through the empirical survey and analysis. The aims of the study are as follows: "To suggest a new approach, or model of evaluation, analysis of various art performances. To become the first case of empirical study on the economic impact of performing arts. To reach the amount of audience's average consumption. To measure the economic impact of a certain area causing performing arts. To motivate the impact analysis of performing arts. To make the first inductive analysis and output."
One of the limits of this study is the difficulty in practically collecting the data involved in the operating costs of performance halls and the production costs of performances. To contribute to the development of art and the art policy, the study should be continued at large, analyzing Daehangno's phenomenon and how it changes. The study should be continued and should research the characteristics of performance agencies in Daehangno, how to raise the cost of production and operation for performing arts, the contents of the employment induction impact, etc. The analysis which applies the contingent valuation method (CVM) of unmarketable goods such as the social and also the cultural value of performing is left as a future task to be solved.
