Cities are increasingly using landmark to improve their image and stimulate attract visitors. Seoul is the most famous tourism destination in Korea, so over 80% foreign travelers are visiting to Seoul. For this reason, making good destination image of Seoul can be the key to successful Korea tourism. Landmark plays an important part of destination image and inflowing of many foreign travelers. It is deplorable that Seoul doesn't have special landmark which represent characteristic and variety of Seoul. Moreover, in the part of Korea tourism, the study about landmark rarely have done so the subject demands close investigation.
The purpose of this study is to define the positioning of five Seoul landmarks with landmark attributes and to find the most suitable landmark with Seoul image.
The main survey was performed based on a positioning strategy for Japanese, Chinese, Australian & American travelers who visited more than three seoul landmarks. A total of 240 questionaries were distributed and 210 of them are used for the analysis. SPSS 15.0 for Windows program was selected to analysis the collected questionnaires. The main method for this study was Multidimensional Scaling and frequency analysis, Correspondences analysis were used.
As a first result, foreign visitor recognized Gyeong-Bok Gung, National of museum and COEX 63building as a similar group, but in case of N tower was recognized differently.
Second, result of positioning depending on attribute, N tower included most attributes which are visibility, comparison, symbolism, representability. So foreign traveler recognized N tower as competitive landmark among the five landmarks. But it doesn't mean that N tower is the most suitable landmark for Seoul image.
Over all, the landmark which correspond with Seoul image doesn't exist so Seoul city council tourism developers should try to develop the landmark that can represent Seoul image.
