This case study is on art therapy for a group of girls maladjusted to their girls? technical high school. In today?s world, traditional values crumble down, families? structure and functions weaken, teenagers are not controlled and education is crippled focusing only on lining students up while those teenagers maladjusted to it are showing various symptoms and signs. As teenagers spend much time in their schools, they cannot but learn how to mingle with people of the same age at school, getting all types of realistic experiences and alternatives to live as a constituent of society. But as teachers have so many things to take care of besides students and each teacher has to look after dozens of students, they have difficulty dealing with maladjusted students? problems, which in turn lead to a deteriorated education for social adaptation. Their maladjustment problem is serious in that it could pose an obstacle for them to grow up as healthy adults.
The study?s purpose lies in finding out how group art therapy influences maladjusted teenagers in improving their social skills, the lack of which is one of their major characteristics.
For the purpose, the case study first defines ?teenagers maladjusted to their schools? and explains their social characteristics, after which look into the relations between group art therapy and social skill increase. Then, through the group art therapy conducted to increase their social skills, the works of art and therapy process are observed and recorded.
The following are the research outcomes.
The students showed an improvement in self-expression and emotion-control abilities via the therapy revolving around co-working and in social skills through the positive interaction among them supporting one another. By means of artistic works, it became possible for them to express their thoughts and feelings, sympathize with one another and share opinions for peer-to-peer interaction. The process contributed to the social skill increase by eliciting their understanding of and identification with their peers while making the group more dynamic. In other words, the group art therapy for the maladjusted high-schoolers resulted in an increase in their relating skills by positively influencing their relationships. The skills earned from the small group might be extended and applied to bigger settings ? their home, school, society, etc.
