The purpose of this study is to analyze the 'markers’ in elementary Korean language textbooks to categorize them, and to explore the different ways of applying these markers for an educational purposes.
While we need an argumentative education system to rationally resolve the conflicts created by today’s divergent education systems. Korean Language Education content is not organized accordingly. The problem lies in the argumentative-media-based argumentative text that only focuses on the creation of argument propositions rather than their application into sentences and texts. The author has recognized the needs for a marker that can accurately represent the connective propositions between the propositions.
Recognizing these issues, the author reviews relevant studies and then suggests a new research method. First, the author analyzes the markers by extracting the elements of arguments and the argument schemes from the previous studies. The author finds that the markers are made using with idiomatic expressions that are beyond simple connectives or type of simple type of concepts. The markers are classified into four types: ‘argument elements-markers', ‘argument structure-markers', ‘argument schemes-markers', and ‘argumentative interaction-markers'. Detailed information on the sub-types is presented in this report. The author typifies each marker’s representative form and presents the marker that appears in the actual argumentative text. Further, the author compares the frequency with which the markers appear in a textbook. The study shows that the higher a marker's frequency of appearance, the more typically it manifests according to the order of markers’ educational type. The analyzed markers demonstrate the practical usage without filtration and can be used as a framework for analyzing a specific genre argumentative text.
Based on the result of the marker analysis, the following has been proposed as an educational application. The author presents a production activity model of argumentative text that utilizes these markers. This model provides a step-by-step investigation of a composition method of the 'markers learning materials'. The author presents an understanding of the activity steps of argumentative text by utilizing the markers and introduces a review list wherein the students can critique and understand rather than just accept the text. An analysis of argumentative writing errors that are committed by elementary school students is included in this research.
Finally, the author provides a list of argumentative educational text markers called 'the markers learning materials'. The list allows a dictionary to not only utilize markers but also to aid students locate the markers. It considers both of the need for the education to be understandable and for it to be expression-able. The contribution of this research is that it classifies the markers according to the argumentative texts and specifies an approach that applies the markers.
This research is based on elementary textbooks. To ensure a higher efficiency of argumentative education, diverse levels of texts should be analyzed to determine detailed teaching materials and methods.
