Comfort women(sexually enslaved women for Japanese soldiers) and foreigners' whores (military campside town women) had underwent multi-layered colonization through colonization, post-colonization, re-colonization, and new-colonization to provide sexual comforts to imperial soldiers of Japan followed by the United States's. While sexual slaves for Japanese soldiers are treated as sexual victims under Japan's militarism, military campside town women have been considered corrupt whores to serve the U.S. soldiers for extravagance and vanity although they became involved in the sex trade because of such various reasons as the damaged self-pride after getting raped, family responsibility, or American dream. Ignoring campside towns were born by the Korean War and the presence of U.S. forces, which resulted in the campside prostitution, Korean society has excluded campside women from the national range regarding them as wrongdoers.
Military campside town stories are the novels that cover such diverse issues around the U.S. military campside towns as Korean women's sexual trade with, living together with, and marriage to U.S. soldiers along with giving birth to mixed-blood children. Although having been published by many authors since the liberation, Korea's campside town stories have been discussed as parts of other subaltern genres like anti-American literature or war literature even without a proper record of genealogy because most of the Korean literary scholars habitually think of sex as a subject not desirable for their research topics. Even if the younger group of scholars in women's studies is in progress of studying the issue from the perspective of feminism and socialism, their studies tend to be fragmented.
Based on the theory of postcolonialism, this study attempts to look into the multi-layered colonial status and the authors' postcolonial ideologies reflected in military campside town stories. Originally, 'colonization' includes the concepts of not only physical subordination under the operation of the past imperialism but also new-colonization and re-colonization as the aftermath of the colonization remaining like sediments even after the colonization is over. It also includes gender-related colonization of men's exclusive possessing and exploiting women as well as the repression and subordination between two nations. For this, studying multi-layered colonial status campside town women had went through carries an important meaning of finding a common ground between postcolonialism vs. feminism and feminism vs. literary sociology. This study refers to Said's Orientalism, Bhabha's Hybridism, Fanon's race and resistance, Spivak's Subaltern theory and feminism to analyze colonialism and postcolonialism of U.S. military campside town stories.
To analyze the literary works, the study divides campside town stories published for the last 60 years since the liberation into ones in three periods, 20 years in a period,to closely examine the flow of mental history for each period. The stories discussed in the study beginning with the one written by Jeong-hee Choi include the ones written by writers of medium standing like Jeong-rae Jo, Heung-gil Yun, Hae-il Jo, Seok-gyeong Gang, Sun-tae Mun, Jeong-mo Yun, and Wan-seo Park; the ones written by not actively discussed writers like Gwang-ju Kim, In-bin Baek, U-hui Yu, Byeong-sam Min, Byeong-ro Kim, and Sun Lee; the ones written by Korean-American writers like Nora Ok-ja Keller, all of which are compiled to create genealogy of U.S. military campside town stories. By including the authors' works that were once excluded from the cease-fire-centered principle without discriminating the centers and surroundings in the genealogy and analyzing them, this study corresponds to the purport of postcolonialism.
The outcomes of the postcolonial analysis of U.S. military campside town stories after making the genealogy are following. The external colonization and internal colonization are complicatedly entangled in military campside town stories. While the residence of U.S. forces made possible in a conspiracy of imperialism and national security is the external colonization, the internal colonization is the possession and exploitation of campside town women by nationalism and patriarchy. That is, military campside town women are not only a sexually romanticized colony by U.S. soldiers within the external colonization belonging to the U.S. forces but also put into a situation of the intenal colonization of being exploited by men in a patriarchal system. A male-dominated principle not able to forgive women for selling her body to American soldiers to support her family gives campside town women double-layered exploitation. Also, the general public endow them with otherness rejecting their exotic appearances and behaviors, which degrades campside town women into the 'unspeakable' or 'indescribable' subaltern class of gender. Here, 'speaking' means 'the one' in Spivak's question 'Can the subaltern speak?' signifying the speaking in a form of resistant arguing rather than spontaneous combustion.
The authors' perspectives are generally sympathetic for campside town women in that there are a great many novels depicting them as victims while just a few reproduce them as tempted corrupt prostitutes, which proves military campside town stories function like 'compellation' to the distasted subaltern class. Authors tend to make dominant female characters confess the lives of campside town women or attempt to let intelligent narrators or characters in stories speak for the subaltern class. In these ways, speaking through characters in stories or narrators conveys a resistant strain. Military campside town stories viewthe U.S. from a different standpoint from anti-American literature that sees the U.S. as an object for expressing hostile feelings. The U.S. is filed off as a double-sided object to both campside town women and male subjects. The U.S. to the male subjects is the very subject of the colonization while the U.S. to campside town women is recognized as the nation to lead her to a breakaway from the colonization. American dream to the women means 'an exit' to an escape from multi-layered colonization to 'salvation.' Therefore, the object of their resistance becomes the male-dominated principle of Korea as the subject of the internal colonization. Meanwhile, the male subjects who consider campside town women the sexually romanticized colony by the U.S. forces describe their resistance against the imperialism of the U.S. though intellectual male narrators or characters in stories.
What we cannot fail to notice in military campside town stories is the authors present hybrid problems of race, class, and gender driven from the sexual trade process between two races with different nationality, Korean women and U.S. soldiers, as well as the problems military campside town women face.Military campside towns reappeared in stories are not only the space with the centers of racial discrimination against black soldiers, exclusion and otherness of mixed-blood people favoring the pure-blood principle, and conflicts and rankings among women but also the hybrid space with the surroundings repeatedly reproduced through the process of overturning and reversing. Likewise, military campside town stories have values of restoring the sympathetic and compassionate voices from the surroundings toward other subaltern classes differentiated by race and class as well as toward the military campside town women.
This study grants values to military campside town stories that used to be treated like a stepchild in the history of literature, lights up the historical values of literature through the postcolonial analysis, and tries to induce changed perspectives based on more embracing sympathy for the campside town women who have been considered indecent whores tempted by fetishism. The discussions of the military campside town stories are expected to multiply if detailed analysis of texts pushed aside before because of the cease-fire-oriented principle is conducted, and war novels related to Vietnam War along with novels dealing with traditional prostitute are compared to them.

The U.S. is filed off as a double-sided object to both campside town women and male subjects. The U.S. to the male subjects is the very subject of the colonization while the U.S. to campside town women is recognized as the nation to lead her to a breakaway from the colonization.
