The 21st century is a knowledge-based society that considers personal characteristics and emotions important and the soft competitive advantages such as design and brand are being highlighted as the main factors of national competitiveness.
Recently, our government has also declared the intent to concentrate on cultivating design as a high value-added industry of the 21st century through the policy of creative culture, along with the public pledge of 'Design in Korea, Beautiful Korea'. Then, what would be differentiated design strategies in such internationally competitive society? The clue of its solution can be found in the statement by an American futurist John Naisbitt, "think locally and act globally!" This suggests that developing South Korea's own unique brand by rediscovering the traditional culture in the global era in which the generalization and assimilation of cultures are accelerating is the keyword in assuring national competitiveness. The surest way to strengthen the national competitiveness in not only the design industry but also others in the era of internationalization and information of the 21st century is to lead the current of world culture through the establishment of our cultural identity and internationalization of the traditional art and culture, and cultivating creative people through which the foundation of such capabilities can be established is the mission of art education.
Upon reflecting such demand of the time, the 2007 revised national curriculum for middle school art education is presenting a direction for allowing learners to develop a sense of pride for our culture and contribute in the internationalization of traditional art and culture, as they interpret artworks in the right context and understand the meaning of art and culture, while emphasizing the social and cultural role of school art education.
However, it is difficult for learners to have extensive and in-depth understanding on the traditional art and carry out activities of expression with the constitution of the current 7th curriculum and the composition of textbook contents. To overcome such limitation of art curriculum, a study is needed on the plan to recompose the learning contents on traditional art according to the standards of students and utilize them easily in lessons.
Upon reflecting such circumstance of the time and characteristics of art education, a plan has been sought in this study to allow students to foster a cultural sense of pride and cultivate creative expression abilities by allowing them to comprehensively understand our traditional art and culture and utilize them in actual life. Accordingly, a teaching-learning material with the subject of <Danchung>, among traditional art and culture of our country, has been developed and applied as follows;
First, a homepage of【Danchung's-http://danchung2ne.hosting.paran.com】has been developed to allow student to easily understand the general contents on Danchung and download and utilize information on pattern.
Second, Danchung patterns have been created in various sizes of OHP films to allow students to utilize them as pattern draft materials during their design activities.
Third, the various learning contents put on the homepage such as the types of Danchung patterns, artwork production process and pictures of student artworks (learning results) have been produced in A5 size mini book to be easily utilizing in the conceptual step.
Fourth, the items such as bridge and fence have been utilized by producing them as supplementary materials to allow students to concentrate on design activities by alleviating their burden on three dimensional structures while producing environment design artwork using Danchung patterns.
Fifth, the artworks by students that recreated Danchung patters have been produced in folding screen type by placing them together according to the pattern types to allow students to dynamically observe the shapes and colors of Danchung patters and concretize images.
Sixth, it has been allowed to discover the possibility of odernization and internationalization of traditional patterns by presenting the design artworks by students that applied Danchung patterns as reference artwork collection.
A student survey research was conducted to examine the results of such study activities, and the following educational effects were found upon analyzing the results.
First, the student's sense of pride on traditional culture increased, along with in-depth understanding on Danchung, through picture and video materials including web materials.
Second, the students became well aware in details the types and characteristics of Danchung patterns through their reproducing process of Danchung patterns utilizing various learning materials, and their creative expression abilities were enhanced through the process of reinterpreting traditional patterns in modern images and expressing them according to their sense of beauty and level of creativity.
Third, the four pieces of the artworks by students that were
created from 'Design Lesson through Danchung Patter Reinterpretation' were chosen including 'special selection', and it was found accordingly that this study contributed in the development of latent creativity of students, along with the suggestion of the possibility of traditional pattern development.
Lastly, several suggestions has been presented such as curriculum, composition of textbook contents and effort on the school filed as a constructive plan for traditional art education upon finishing this study.
