Advertising is a communication means intended to zoom in the merits of products or an enterprise or the positive values of a brand to sell the products or enhance the preference. However, if we communicate them plainly as they are, it will be a very dull and hard method. Therefore, when we have circularly expressed the things or concepts well-known already, it can be a far effective persuasion means, A metaphorical expression provides consumers with a more creative meaning with a complex signification. That is, a metaphorical expression appearing in the advertisements communicates product properties information efficiently and transfers the meaning by means of the similarity between the metaphorical object and the special brand. Metaphor also causes consumers to do the information processing of a deeper level because a metaphorical expression gives the delight of interpretation to consumers and stimulates their curiosity about the brand.
Herewith we carried out this study to figure out how the metaphorical expression in the automobile advertising had an effect upon consumers' attitude about advertising. In order to achieve the objective of the study we performed the literature review through precedent researches and theoretical analysis and the positive analysis through a survey as well, and we selected the language of advertising targeting the newspaper advertising and magazine advertising of five domestic automakers(Hyundai, Kia, GM Daewoo, Renault Samsung, Ssangyong) for 10 years from 2000 to the present. The survey was selected targeting 200 male and female adults out of driving license bears(able to drive) in 20's to 50's who reside in the metropolitan area. We used SPSS 12.0K statistic program for a statistic analysis method and carried out the study through χ²-test verification, repeated measures ANOVA.
In this research, we established the research questions and the hypothesis as the following to achieve the purpose of this study.
Firstly, in order to inquire into consumers' attitude of advertising according to the classification of advertisements, we set up Hypothesis 1 as “the metaphorical expression according to advertising classifications(launching ads, retentive advertising) will make differences in consumers' advertising attitude". As the results of this analysis, the advertising attitude on the launching advertisements marked 3.23 points, whereas the advertising attitude on the retentive advertisements marked 3.88 points, and the advertising attitude on the retentive advertisements appeared high, which was a meaningful difference in 0.1% of significance level. Through this figures, it was shown that in the advertising using the metaphorical expression of language such an effective advertising attitude was more efficient in the retentive advertisements than in the launching advertisements, so Hypothesis 1 was adopted.
Secondly, in order to figure out the difference of the advertising attitude according to the metaphorical expression and involvement of advertising language, we established Hypothesis 2 as “there will be some differences in the influences of the metaphorical expression of advertising language upon the advertising attitude according to the level of consumers' involvement”. As the results of analysis therefrom, it was shown that advertising attitude was the lowest in case both the subjective idea and the subordinate idea were an explicit metaphor(M=3.31), and then advertising attitude was high when the subjective idea was the implicit and the subordinate idea was an explicit metaphor(M=3.61), and advertising attitude was the highest when the subjective idea was explicit and the subordinate idea was an implicit metaphor(M=3.70). Through this, it could be known that advertising attitude had no differences according to involvement and it had some differences according to the metaphorical expression of the advertising language.
In conclusion, it appeared that out of the factors of the effects of involvement upon the automobile advertising attitude, high involvement and low involvement didn't affect the automobile advertising attitude, but it was shown that advertising attitude was the lowest in case both the subjective idea and the subordinate idea were an explicit metaphor(M=3.31), and then advertising attitude was high when the subjective idea was the implicit and the subordinate idea was an explicit metaphor(M=3.61), and advertising attitude was the highest when the subjective idea was explicit and the subordinate idea was an implicit metaphor(M=3.70). On the other hand, the interactive effects according to the metaphorical expression and the involvement had no significance(F=.810, p>.05). Hence, Hypothesis 3 was rejected. Therefore, it could be known that advertising attitude had no differences according to involvement but it had some differences according to the metaphorical expression of the advertising language.
