Recently, several kinds of pathologies have arisen due to the reverse functions of the human nature. These pathological phenomenon are based on a negative self-esteem. Healthy self-esteem is to treat oneself with care, and to love oneself.
This love is connected to altruism rather than to egoism. When there is a healthy self-esteem built within a human being, positive results can be produced such as a sense of responsibility and a well-being. Psychological well-being would not only be built within an individual, but also be built within one’s family or community.
Therefore, it is important to deal with self-esteem for mental and emotional recovery. Methods for increasing healthy self-esteem must be prepared immediately. In-depth discussions on self-esteem are demanded more and more as emotional distortions are spread widely in this society.
This kind of discussion should not remain generally. It must also be discussed inside the church because several christians turned out to have negative self-esteem. As having these problems, they cannot even be capable of carrying out their responsibilities both in private and social areas.
Christians also have their own relationships with others mutually. However, negative effects can affect themselves and the others if they keep having negative self-esteem. As a result, stress, projection, various toxication, pathological phenomenon and the reverse function in personal relations can be occurred. Psychological well-being and quality of life would be lowered, and negative results would affect their family, church and social life.
Therefore, pastors must diagnose and prescribe the christians’ negative self-esteem. Furthermore, plans to recover and to promote their self-esteem must be prepared within the church.
There are complete resources for this recovery and increase of self-esteem in the Bible. Therefore, emotional recovery system based on the Bible can help the christians to promote their self-esteem. Their emotional well-being can produce positive results for their family and social organizations.
This investigation is especially focused on the healthy self-esteem and its effects on the responsibility and the emotional well-being. The meanwhile, responsibility was mostly dealt in ethics and pedagogy, and it has been disregarded in psychology and counselling.
However, responsibility is a decisive key to recover and to promote emotions. When a person can have healthy responsibility, it would affect self-esteem and psychological well-being positively.
Therefore, this investigation is focused on studying relationship among self-esteem, responsibility and psychological well-being, and preparing plans for counseling.
Under this purpose, this investigation set self-esteem as an independent variable and psychological well-being as a dependent variable to establish a hypothetical model. It also analyzed the mutual effects between self-esteem, responsibility and psychological well-being philologically and statistically.
In philological study, self-esteem had stative relationship with responsibility and psychological well-being. In statistical study, all three variables had significant relationship with each other.
To prove the relationship of self-esteem, responsibility and psychological well-being of the christians, christians from 8 churches placed in Gimpo area(Gyeonggi-do) were investigated through the questionnaires.
Total 337 usable questionnaires were collected and analyzed on its reliability, validity and significance.
According to the analysis result, the first hypothesis "there would be a difference in self-esteem, responsibility and psychological well-being according to the christians’ characteristics(sex, age, faith study, number of attending services, faith training, small-group participation, etc)" was supported significantly.
Also, the second hypothesis "christians’ self-esteem would affect their responsibility positively", the third hypothesis "christians’ self-esteem would affect their psychological well-being positively", the fourth hypothesis "christian’s responsibility would affect their psychological well-being positively", and the fifth hypothesis "responsibility would have mediating effects between self-esteem and psychological well-being" were supported and proved statistically.
Through other analysis, it was confirmed that self-esteem, responsibility and psychological well-being affect each other positively. These statistical results proved a validity of this research model.
Partial interrelationship was supported among component elements of self-esteem, responsibility and psychological well-being, and close interrelationship was proved among self-esteem, responsibility and psychological well-being statistically.
Therefore, it is very significant to prepare a system for recovering and increasing the christians’ self-esteem, responsibility and psychological well-being through the Bible. Increasing the christians’ self-esteem would also promote their responsibility and psychological well-being.
With this in mind, the pastors must pursuit a pastorate with care. They also need to support the christians to increase their self-esteem, responsibility and psychological well-being through preaching, faith training and small-group support. Especially, a thorough faith training through counselling would recover the christians’ emotional recoveries.
Needless to say, this kind of faith training must not end in formalism. It should be a Biblical training to recover a healthy spirituality and emotion. Faith training is recommended to precede the existing disciple training, to promote their self-esteem, responsibility and psychological well-being first.
Based on these results, pastoral counselling programs should be prepared within churches. It is also expected to have investigations analyzing the effects of those programs, and to form i
