This study investigated to figure out and to support appropriate parenting style of mothers, by examination of the differences of parenting styles between mothers of young disabled children and mothers of young children without disability, through comparison. This study selected internal-external controls, depression and psychological well-being of mother, as main factors among various factors which affect two different parenting styles of mothers.
This study deals 443 mothers of young children with and without disabilities who have been using public day-care centers in Seoul and Gyunggi-do, South Korea.
Independent Samples t-test, Correlation Analysis, and Path Analysis through Multiple Regression were done. All processes are confirmed under statistical significant level p<.05. This study resulted in the conclusion like following:
1. Significant differences were found between the mothers of young children with and without disabilities. Mothers of young children without disability showed higher positive parenting style of the mothers than those of young children with disability, while negative parenting style of the mothers showed no significant differences. And mothers of young children without disability showed the higher internal control, the more psychological well-being and the lower depression than those with disability. However, in external control, there were not found any differences between those two groups.
2. In internal control and psychological well-being, positive parenting style of mothers with and without disabilities showed positive correlation; in external control and depression, they showed negative relationships. In external control and depression, negative parenting style of mothers showed positive correlation; in psychological well-being and internal control, mothers of young disabled children showed negative correlation, and in internal control showed no significant correlation. However, mothers of young children without disability showed no significant correlation in psychological well-being and internal control.
3. In both groups, psychological well-being proved to be the most effective variation to positive parenting style of mothers, and external control the most effective variation to negative parenting style of mothers. In the case of mothers of young disabled children, positive parenting style of mothers was directly affected by internal control, while indirectly affected by internal control through psychological well-being. However, in the case of mothers of without disability, positive parenting style of mothers was only indirectly affected by internal-external control because of psychological well-being and depression.
Mothers of young disabled children with negative parenting styles showed the direct affection by external control as well as the indirect affection by external control caused by depression. However, mothers of young children without disability, with negative parenting style, showed only direct affection by external control.
