The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of interaction-centered group music therapy on the improvement of self-expression and social skill in adults with intellectual disabilities.
Research subjects were 20 people who were the first level of intellectual disabilities using daytime protective program of rehabilitation center located in D Metropolitan City, and they were divided into experimental group received interaction-centered group music therapy and control group not received such music therapy as each 10 people respectively.
Group music therapy program as experimental treatment was performed for experimental group between September 2008 and December 2008 with 40 minutes per week, total 13 times.
Self-expression scale developed by Rakos Schroder((1979), adapted appropriately for our cultural standards by Changjin Byeon and Seonghee Kim(1980), and reconstructed linguisticallyㆍphoneticallyㆍnonverbally through complement and modification according to the guide of special educator and expert adapted for adolescence and children with intellectual disabilities by Jinhye Lee(2005) and Soyoung Oh(2006) and Social Skills Rating System (SSRS) developed by Gresham and Elliott(1990), and reconstructed as 3 main areas of cooperationㆍ self-assertion ㆍself-control by Hyangji Kim(1996) were used as research tools.
Data was statistically analyzed by using SPSS for windows 15.0, mean value and standard deviation of pre- and post-examination score by each group was calculated and ANOVA was performed in order to find treatment effect of interaction-centered group music therapy program.
The results of this research is as follows.
Firstly, Interaction-centered Group Music Therapy influences positive effect on the improvement of self-expression of adults with intellectual disabilities.
Secondly, Interaction-centered Group Music Therapy influences positive effect on the improvement of social skills of adults with intellectual disabilities.
Therefore it was shown that Interaction-centered Group Music Therapy program was influenced positively on the whole linguisticㆍphoneticㆍnonverbal self-expression of adults with intellectual disabilities, and on the social skill of adults with intellectual disabilities since cooperationㆍself-assertionㆍself-control was significantly increased.
