This study was conducted to see if a correlation between activities of daily living and quality of life according to the family support of stroke patients. For that, this study examined 67 stroke patients at K hospital from November 2008 to February 2009. Instruments used for this study are family support scale and functional independence measure(FIM) and stroke specific quality of life(SS-QOL). The results were as follows.
First, the study revealed statistically meaningful gaps in the items such as the family support and activities of daily living, the family support and quality of life, and the activities of daily living and quality of life(p< .01).
Second, the study revealed that the degree of family support was higher for the group of patients who were nursed by family members than the group of patients who were nursed by non-family members(p< .01).
Third, the study revealed that the degree of activities of daily living was higher for the group of patients who were nursed by family members than the group of patients who were nursed by non-family members(p< .01).
Fourth, the study revealed that the degree of quality of life was higher for the group of patients who were nursed by family members than the group of patients who were nursed by non-family members(p< .01).
In conclusion, this study confirm that the higher the family supports mark, the higher the activities of daily living and quality of life would mark. As for the stroke patients, the degree of family support marked higher for the group of patients who were nursed by family members. It suggests that the family support is a very important factor to help the stroke patients conduct activities of daily living and to improve their quality of life. Thus, if the patients can obtain a positive support from their families during the treatment to recover their neurological disorders, they will be able to achieve not only the better success in rehabilitation but also the better quality of life. In the future, it will be certainly very important to include the family support in the treatment program for stroke patients so that they can have a better quality of life.
