The object of this thesis is to study the narrative cognition of the Korea-War novels and to inspect their change and durability in historical development. In this case, the narrative cognition means the authors' senses by literary works on a basis of the Korea-War. In other words, the object of this thesis is to get at the root of anticommunism ideology and authors' senses of it through the formation of anticommunism ideology as a dominant discourse.
Anticommunism ideology has its own peculiarity such as unpardonable disposition. That is to say there was dichotomy between 'my side' and 'the other side- procommunist'. During and after the Korea-War, South-Korea was compelled to be the principle of standardization. Opposed to the anticommunism ideology, authors kept resisting it to be free of it because they thought they can confront actual circumstances.
It is a sense of purpose to build up a desired government by a war that distinguishes the Korea-War from other wars. Whether North-Korea who started a war or South-Korea who went on the offensive, they wanted to establish wartime occupied territory policy and to justify their conducts through execution of their policy. Authors applied particularity and generality of the Korea-War to resources of literary works. However, the production of literary works was not a smooth way because of anticommunism ideology which is oppressing novel discourses and nationalism which is implanting a sense of guilt. This thesis shows the way to name this production for structural-antinomy and inspects it through 'model actantiel', A.J.Greimas. Wartime occupied territory policy of North-Korea was not prospected because of the knife-edge of anticommunism. Moreover, the military confrontation between North and South was accommodated to novels in the form of avoidance or sublation. The narrative cognition which is far from actual circumstances of the war was the main-stream. Since it is impossible to free from anticommunism ideology if war characteristic called wartime occupied territory policy would be emphasized, on the other hand, there would be the tragedy of fratricidal war again if violence of war would be embodied.
Unlike chapter 2 about literal-sociology background, area and profundity are examined on chapter 3 and chapter 4. There is an aspect of subjective awareness in the Korea-War short stories from 1950's to 1960's on chapter 3. In a view of epistmological side, the Korea-War novels can be divided into two groups. One is dualism aiming at a confrontational logic. The other is a triple-structure aiming at a reconciliation. Main ideas of dualism are to testify to immorality of war and to boost military purpose by enhancing military exploits. On the other hand, triple-structure represents humanism and nationalism based on characters who suffer violence of war and absurd situations like fratricidal war.
In chapter 4, feature-length stories are organized with diachronic approach about the history of the Korea-War novels. The Korea-War novels' trend was a feature-length story since 1960's. The way narrative cognition of the Korea-War novels forms relations is inferred from subject itinerary with Choi In-Hoon, 'The Square' in order. While Choi put his intention to be free from ideologic antagonism into 'The Square', Hong described the Korea-War as a national burden in his work, 'the South and the North'. 'the South and the North' helped to get rid of misunderstanding about thinking the exile in a neutral nation just as an escapism. Another work, Kim Won-Il, 'A fire festival' showed the cognition ; though fathers' dreams of building up two different political structures in liberation became incomplete, their dreams succeeded in a next generation. The narrative cognition of the Korea-War novels by analysis of these three works was a kind of oath to heal the wound positively caused by the Korea-War and not to repeat the tragedy like that.
