A purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parents' communication styles and infants' self-regulation and social ability. The subjects consisted of 255 children from 3 year to 5 year old and their parents at kindergartens in Jeon ju.
The research tools were‘The questionnaire about parents' communication styles’ by Sung Kyung Sim and Na Rim Kim (1997) and infants' self-regulatory ability was analyzed according to Self-Control Rating Scale (SCRS) by Kendall & Willcox (1979). Also infants'‘Social capability’was examined by Soo Kyung Woo (2002). The data were analyzed with frequency and Pearson correlation.
The results of this study were as follows: First, there was positive relation between parents' communication styles and infants' self-regulation. There was positive relation between mother's positive communication and lower factors of young infants' self-regulation. But it showed neglected relation between father's negative attitude on way of communication and infants' self-regulation.
Second, there was positive relation between parents' communication styles and infants' social ability. But it only showed in cooperating part, which is a lower factor of social ability by mother's positive communication.
Third, there was positive relation between infants' self-regulation and social ability. The report shows high interrelation in self-regulation, Minimization of impulsiveness and concentration, Which is infant's self control and initiative, cooperation and sociality, which are lower factors of infant's social ability.
Finally, this research suggests that the more parents show positive communication, the more children grow their self-regulation and social ability. Also this report shows there are necessities on developing the programs connected with families and educational organization to educated infant's self-regulation and their social ability.
