진로교육 프로그램이 초등학교 특수학급 아동의 진로성숙도 향상에 미치는 효과 = The Effect of Career Education Program for Special Classes Children in The Elementary on Career Maturity Degree

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a career education program on the career maturity of children in special class in a bid to pave the way for better career guidance and counseling geared toward children in special class, as those children were actually ruled out from career education. Three research questions were posed:
1. What is the effect of a career education program on the career maturity of school children in special class?
2. What is the effect of a career education program on the career attitude of school children in special class?
3. What is the effect of a career education program on the career competence of school children in special class?

To address the research questions, relevant literature was reviewed to explore the influence of career education programs on the career maturity of nondisabled and disabled children. The subjects in this study were four children who were enrolled in special class in D elementary school located in the city of Busan. They included two boys and two girls, and a career maturity test was carried out before a career education program was provided.
The instrument used in this study was the Gangwon-Do Education Research Institute(1993)'s Career Maturity Inventory for Elementary and Middle Schoolers, and existing career-related programs were adapted to suit the career awareness level of elementary schoolers in consideration of the type and characteristics of the selected children's disabilities(Kim Sang-mo, 2003; Park Eun-jin, 2006; Oh Mi-kyung, 2006; Seoul Education and Science Research Institute, 2003).
The program was provided by this researcher to the children in the special classroom 18 times after school from March 23 to May 1, 2009, three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 60 minutes each.
The same career maturity test as the pretest was conducted again immediately after the program was conducted to verity its effect.
The collected data were analyzed with a SPSS 10.0 program, and t-test was utilized to analyze the pretest and posttest data to address the research questions.

The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the career education program had a favorable effect on the career maturity of the school children in special class. By the type of disability, that was effective at improving the career maturity of the children with learning disabilities.
Second, the career education program had a positive effect on the planning and disposition of the school children in special class, which were part of career attitude.
Third, the career education program had a positive effect on the vocational understanding, self-understanding and vocational choice of the elementary schoolers in special class, which were subareas of career competence.

Given the findings of the study, there are some suggestions:
First, the career education program used in this study was reorganized in consideration of the type and characteristics of the selected children's disabilities so that it could be more accessible to them. But that was partially elusive for the mentally retarded children who lagged behind nondisabled children in terms of cognitive skills, and easier and activity- centered programs should be prepared by utilizing realia.
Second, a follow-up test wasn't fulfilled in this study to find out the lasting effects of the career education program due to environmental restrictions. In the future, more prolonged research efforts should be channeled into determining the sustained effects of the career education program.
