Korea and China have shared long history of common culture. However, their development pathways since modern ages have been different, which lead to a huge gap in cultural backgrounds between two countries. This article compares Korean and Chinese proverbs to comprehend the present relationship between the two "so close, yet so far" countries and provides perspectives on the status of the relationship.
Proverbs are phrases which imply didactic meanings. Proverbs are transmitted by words among the people and livelihoods of the people are reflected within them. In this paper, animal proverbs of Korea and China, especially on animals of twelve zodiacs, were studied with comparison of characteristics and symbols of twelve zodiac animals of each country.
Chapter 2 presents characteristics of Korean and Chinese proverbs. This chapter also suggests conditions for a proverb and how a proverb is defined in each country. There are various proverbs which could be translated into Korean. However, in this study, the criteria of a proverb were not culled from personal standards but from proverbs documented in the proverb dictionary..
Chapter 2 deals with the origin of twelve zodiacs: the origin of twelve zodiacs transmitted in China, how twelve zodiacs are appreciated in other countries, and how twelve zodiacs were spread in Korea. The twelve zodiacs have largely affected livelihoods of Korean and Chinese people for a long period of time.
Chapter 3 delves into the characteristics of each twelve zodiac animal from mouse to pig and their basic impressions, and then symbols of animals were compared by proverbs of Korea and China. It is remarkable that the basic traits of animals are not necessarily consistent with the implied meanings of proverbs. Animals revered in folklore were often converted to inauspicious symbols, because proverbs are words handed down by the public instead of words used in upper classes. Moreover, proverbs have characteristics of drawing lessons from negative aspects rather than positive aspects of animals.
In Chapter 4, we diagrammatically charted the ideas discussed in chapter 3. Here discusses the overall image of twelve zodiacs and divides the positive and negative image within the proverb and also synthetically writes regarding various images represented within the proverb.
In conclusion, the difference between Korea and China are not reflected in proverbs although they have different development pathways since modern ages. However, it is anticipated that such similarities will not continue. There are already indications of variation in pattern of life due to change in lifestyle and the difference between Korea and China. Related studies on Korean and Chinese culture should proceed, because they can provide us with substantial sources on similarities and differences between the two countries..
Although this study only covers small part of proverbs related to animals, the comparison between Korean and Chinese language will contribute to a better understanding of past and current lives of the people within each country, and the study will, hopefully, provide insights into outlook for future relationship of each country.
