This study is to catch hold of the work stress and presenteeism of nurses with shift work and to identify the relation between them by conducting a survey with 281 ward nurses working for a university hospital located in Daegu from February 13 to 28 in 2009. Data were analyzed with SPSS 15.0 Program to obtain general quality, perceived productivity and health issues based on frequency and percentage. To determine work stress, work performance loss, perceived productivity and health problems, t-test, ANOVA and Scheffe verification test were used. Correlations between variables were found by using Pearson correlation coefficients. To find out the factors influencing outstanding variables, multiple linear regression was used.
The present study reached the following conclusion:
    1) The stress point perceived by subjects was 3.47 on average out of 5. Work overload and psychological burden as the sub-category of the work stress factor got the highest point(3.78), while physical environment was lowest(3.03).
    2) Presenteeism was measured in terms of work performance loss, perceived productivity and health issue. Work performance loss turned out to be 26.89 out of 100. Work performance loss depending on general quality showed statistically significant differences in order of age(p<.001), education(p<.05), clinical experience(p<.01) and monthly salary(p<.05). Perceived productivity got 79.79 point out of 100. General qualities showed statistically significant differences in order of age(p<.01), education(p<.05), clinical experience(p<.001) and monthly salary(p<.01). In regard to the health issue, the highest percentage of respondents picked out 'shoulder stiffness or waist pain’ as the most serious health problem(76.5%), followed by ‘stomach troubles’(51.2%), ‘headache’(35.2%), and ‘insomnia’(28.5%). 94.7% of respondents answered they had health problems.
    3) A significant positive correlation was found between work stress, work performance loss(p<0.01) as a variable for presenteeism and health issue(p<0.01). Another significant positive correlation was seen between work overload and psychological burden as the sub-category of the work stress and work performance loss and the number of health problems(p<0.01).
    4) To determine the factors affecting presenteeism, multiple regression analysis was applied. As a result, in model I, the work performance loss was associated with such independent variables as age, marital status and clinical experience to a significant degree, while, in modelⅡ, marital status, clinical experience, work overload and psychological burden were found to be significantly related. As for the factors influencing the perceived productivity, the multiple regression analysis found no significant variables.
To conclude, it was found in the present study that the higher the work stress goes, the bigger the work performance loss becomes and the more health problems they have, the higher their work stress becomes. In that sense, health problems of nurses with shift work need managing at an earlier stage and plans to manage their work stress affecting presenteeism need developing.
