Each period of the life-cycle plays an important role in enriching ones future life and in the course of life as whole. Among these periods is the period of mid-life, the time when ones socio-economic status reaches its peak, and the stability in life as well as mature human relationship is attained. The mid-life period, equivalent to the age group between from 40s and 60s, is often referred to as autumn of life, or afternoon of the day. If we have been pursuing success and advancement in life prior to the mid-life period, the period of mid-life can be referred to as the period of re-assessing our past lives, and planning for more fruitful and meaningful future.
The mid-life period is also referred to as the half-time of life, which means that it is not just an event or the conclusion of life but a part and process of life. Half-time means more than just pursuing changes in personal life style, it leads us away from the plane desire to succeed, which conducts the first half of our lives, and to the desire to live more abundant, profound and diverse lifestyle. Ultimately, the journey of life is not about what we do or achieve in life but what kind of characters we develop into.
The most important internal question that arises during the middle-age is the question of ones true character, or finding who we are. When our identity and our goals are forgotten, we lose our hold on the meanings and the reasons of existence, thus, leading us into the depth of stagnation. Instead of re-assessing the past and preparing for new challenges in future, by comparing our achievements to that of the others, we inevitably face the period of feeling inferior and misfortunate about life. This is the mid-life crisis. The crisis is not selective on who it occurs to, but is a natural event that faces everyone.
However, with the danger comes opportunity. If we understand the fact that the period of mid-life is the period of change and development in personal, domestic, and social relationship, and lead a healthy middle-age life by understanding and loving each other, and re-establishing our individuality, we will be able to lead more productive and integrated old-age life as well as being able to pass on the good faith and inheritance to our children. On the other hand, if we can not overcome the pain and suffering of the mid-life crisis and lose the hold of our lives, the pain and suffering we face will affect not only us, but those around us as well.
In this treatise, we will search for the possible ways of finding out who we are through the mid-life crisis and how to overcome the crisis. The main objective of this treatise is to, through an important Christian concept of encounter, search for pedagogical methods of overcoming the mid-life crisis; by bridging the spiritual gap with God, resolving marital conflicts, and serving our neighbors. I hope this essay, though brief and insufficient, can be a useful guide on overcoming the mid-life crisis.
