The purpose of this study is the meaning opposition aspect of the dimensional adjective in korean. It is used as eight pairs of the dimensional adjective in korean. They were used as basic meaning in space domain. They were also used as extended time domain and abstract domain widely. I will address the meaning opposition aspect of the dimensional adjective in korean through the dictionaries, corpus data and the actual conditions of awareness. First I looked at eight great korean dictionaries. I found out the difference in the description. Therefore I looked at Sejong corpus data from The National Institute of The Korean Language. Next I researched the actual conditions of awareness in the meaning opposition aspect of the pairs'. Finally, I offer the meaning and meaning opposition structure.
In chapter 2, I address the meaning of dimensional adjective. They are divided into three kinds of dimensions. First, it is one dimension that represented as a line. It is related to four pairs of dimensional adjectives. They are 'gilda[long]/jjalda[short]', 'nopda[high]/natda[low]', 'gipda[deep]/yatda[shallow]' and 'gaggapda [near]/meolda[far]'. Second, it is two dimensions that represented as a surface. It is related to a pair of dimensional adjectives that 'neoldda[wide]/jobdda[narrow]'. Third, it is three dimensions that are represented as a solid. It is related to three pairs of dimensional adjectives. Those being 'duggeopda[thick] /yaldda[thin]', 'gukdda[thick or big]/jalda[fine]/ganeolda[thin or slim]', 'keoda[big or large]/jakda[small]. These are basic meaning in space domain. They changed into other meaning in sentence. In basic meaning of the dimensional adjective, the meaning opposition of each pairs is clear. But in the extension meaning, the meaning opposition that each pairs isn't clear. The meaning of polysemy language is usually extended from space to time, abstraction and idiomaticalness. And that dimensional adjectives have a measure meaning at basic meaning. But, it is changed with the valuable meaning.
In chapter 3, I address four pairs of one dimensional adjective. First, I deal with 'gilda[long]/jjalda[short]'. The gilda[long] has 6 meanings and jjalda[short] has 9 meanings in the dictionary and corpus data. It is used basic meaning in the horizontal space domain. and it is extended vertical space domain. Then it is extended to other meanings in time et al. They are used opposite 6 meanings. Second, I deal with 'nopda[high]/natda[low]'. It is much different meaning description in dictionaries and corpus data. So I offer that the nopda[high] has 13 meanings and natda[low] has 9 meanings through the dictionary and corpus data. It is used as basic meaning in the vertical space. Then it is extended other as meanings in time et al. They are used as opposite in 9 meanings. Third, I deal with 'gipda[deep] /yatda[shallow]'. It is used as horizontal space and vertical space. The gipda[deep] has 11 meanings and yatda[shallow] has 10 meanings through the dictionary and corpus data. It is used as basic meaning in the vertical space. Then it is extended as other meanings in time et al. They are used in opposite 8 meanings. Forth, I deal with 'gaggapda[near] /meolda[far]'. The gaggapda[near] has 7 meanings and meolda[far] has 7 meanings in the dictionary and corpus data. It is used basic meaning in the space, and it is extended as other meanings in time et al. They are used in opposite 6 meaning.
In chapter 4, I address a pair of two dimension adjectives, 'neoldda[wide]/jobdda[narrow]'. The neoldda[wide] has 6 meanings in the dictionary and jobdda[narrow] has 6 meanings in the dictionary, also. But it dosen't have an opposite description. The jobdda[narrow] is used with teom[gap] or kumong[hole] in the dictionary description. The neoldda[wide] isn't used with teom[gap] or kumong[hole] in the dictionary description. But neoldda[wide] and jobdda[narrow] are used with teom[gap] or kumong[hole] in corpus data. So I suggest that it has fixed meaning structure.
In chapter 5, I address three pairs of three dimensional adjectives('duggeopda[thick]/yaldda[thin]','gukdda[big]/jalda[fine]/ganeolda[thin]', 'keoda[big or large]/jakda[small]. It is related to a solid. First I deal with 'duggeopda[thick]/yaldda[thin]'. The duggeopda[thick] has 4 meanings and yaldda[thin] has 7 meanings in the dictionary and corpus data. It is used as basic meaning in the space domain and it is extended abstract domain. Then they are used as opposite only basic usage. Second I deal with 'gukdda[big]/jalda[fine]/ganeolda[thin]'. The gukdda[big] has 8 meanings, jalda[fine] has 6 meanings and ganeolda[thin] has 9 meanings in the dictionary and corpus data. It is used basic meaning in the space domain. and it is extended abstract domain. Then they are used as opposite only basic usage, also. Third I deal with 'keuda[big or large]/jakda[small]. The keuda[big or large] has 12 meanings, jakda[small] has 8 meanings and in the dictionary and corpus data. It is used as basic meaning in the space domain. and it is extended abstract domain. Then they are used as opposite usage in 8 meanings. This pair of words have a usage of three dimensional adjective basically, and they are used also one and two dimensional adjectives.
In chapter 6, I research about the syntagmatic relations of co-occurrence words with dimensional adjectives. They have a close connection with each other. In this chapter, I looked at three kinds of words that are spatial word, Time word and abstract word. They connected with dimensional adjective words. One dimensional space word like Seon[line] is used with one dimensional adjective('gilda[long]/jjalda[short]', 'nopda[high] /natda[low]','gipda[deep]/yatda[shallow]', 'gaggapda[near]/meolda [far]'). Two dimensional space words like Undongjang[playground] is used with two dimentional adjectives('neoldda[wide]/jobdda [narrow]') and one dimensional adjectives together. Three dimensional space words like Sangja[box] is used with three dimentional adjectives ('duggeopda[thick]/yaldda[thin]') and one and two dimensional adjectives together. But three dimensional space words like hodu[a walnut] is used with only three dimentional adjectives ('gukdda[thick or big]/jalda[fine]). It's because a thing like an egg isn't outstanding other dimension. And, three dimensional space words like songalak[a finger] is used with three dimentional adjectives('gukdda[thick or big]/ganeolda[thin or slim]') and one dimensional adjectives ('gilda[long]/jjalda[short]'). It's because a thing like stick is infinite in its length.
Time words are co-occurrence with one dimensional adjectives. In addition, horizontal space dimensional adjectives ('gilda[long] /jjalda[short]', 'gipda[deep]/yatda[shallow]', 'gaggapda [near] /meolda[far]'). moksori[Voice] are co-occurrence with all dimensional adjectives except 'neoldda[wide]/jobdda[narrow]'. It is various that another abstract noun is co-occurrence with dimensional adjectives.
