The purpose of this study was to verify the influences of the Self-Growth Group Counseling Program on adaptation to school life, decrease in stress from school and increase in self-respect. Furthermore, maladjusted teenagers from the 9th grade were selected to operate this study.
The study subjects were 9th graders from B middle school, which is located in Anyang, Gyeongido. These students held records of violating school regulations or other maladjustment problems, where the school guidance division teachers advised consultation with the students. To find out whether the students properly fit the group of maladjusted teenagers, the standard includes estrangement from teachers and friends, poor academic achievements, negative attitudes toward the school, absence without notice and frequent tardiness, and self-discrimination. These phenomena were scored so that the higher the score is the level of maladjustment was severe. Among the 30 students that were selected initially, 24 students who scored the high 80% among the entire pool of students were primarily selected. Then, 20 students(male : 14, female : 6) were finally selected according to the approval of the students on the operation method of self-growth group counseling. The finally selected students were randomly divided into 2 groups consisting of 10 students each and were sat as experimental and control group. In order to fulfill the purpose of this study, the program, which, was operated, referenced the self-growth group counseling program that Hyung-deuk Lee(1979) and Hyung-tae Kim(2001) proposed, along with consulting the self-growth group counseling program that Eun-sun Lee(2000) and Young-suk Cho(2004) had presented. Also, since the subjects for this study consisted of maladjusted teenagers, potential drop outs were expected during the program. To prepare for this type of problem, the study on verifying the efficiency of flexible adaption group counseling program development proposed by Mi-gyung Yoon, along with the research on self-growth group counseling program efficiency on maladjusted middle school students were referred to reorganize the program according to conditions of this school. As a tool for conducting the current study, the behavioral surveys for school life maladjustment, developed by Su-guen Park(2003), and test developed by Bo-ga choi and Gui-yeon Jeon (1993), which was based on the revised self-respect test that can apply the scales used in Coopersmith(1967), McChale and Chaighead(1998) to the general schools, were used. Furthermore, a school stress survey, developed by Yong-shik Park, was given to measure stress obtained from school. This survey complied with theoretical stress factors of David Elkind, socio-psychological factor test D.A Girdano and G.S Eventy exemplified, and Life Events Inventory and Life Change Events Scale that were introduced by R.H Rache and T.H. Holmes.
For verifying the effects of the program, a school maladjustment behavioral test, a self-respect test and a school stress test were performed before and after the program was operated and a paired-sample t-test was done using the SPSS 14.0 to derive quantitative differences between the results.
The following results have been retrieved from the procedures and methods above.
First, a noticeable difference(p<.05) existed in the experimental group, which had participated in the self-growth group counseling program, compared to the control group, which had not participated in the program, in the fields of relationship with teachers, relationship with friends, academic activities and following school regulations.
Second, a statistical difference (p<.05) was shown in the increase of self-respect comparing the experimental group, which had participated in the self-growth group counseling program, with the control group, which had not participated in the program, in the fields of general and social, family and school ego within the lower fields of self-respect.
Third, a statistical difference (p<.05) was noticed from the experimental group in the decrease of stress, such as, parent relating, teacher relating and friend relating stress.
Fourth, a statistical difference (p<.01) was shown among the experimental group in school behavior and in-class attitudes compared to the control group that had not participated in the self-growth group counseling program.
Fifth, a statistical difference (p<.01) was noticed in the results for problematic activities among the experimental group compared to the control group.
These results verify the positive influences of the self-growth counseling program, which was performed, such as enhancing school life adapting abilities, lessening stress from school life and increasing self-respect for maladjusted school students.
