As the study with a purpose of generalizing instruction using contents based on augmented reality to elementary school class lessons, it sought to verify the 'an effect of instruction using contents based on augmented reality.' Accordingly, it sought to provide detailed information on the differences in the aspects of the students' learning concentration level, activeness, requirement variable, lesson atmosphere and interaction by analyzing in depth of the learning activities of the students that utilize contents based on augmented reality breaking away from the existing analysis that centers on teachers. And using these information as the basis, this study sought to analyze the effectiveness being revealed when applying contents based on augmented reality related to the science lessons among the course subjects for elementary school students.
This study was conducted from April to September, 2008 by selecting 10 students each from the two classes that display similar learning levels among the fifth- and sixth-grade classes in A Elementary School in Busan as the experimental group and control group.
To verify the hypothesis set for this study, first, the academic accomplishment test that was conducted by Ministry of Education in March, 2008 was conducted as a pretest to measure the identities of the two groups for the group that will implement the lessons that utilize contents based on augmented reality and the group that will implement traditional lessons, and, after conducting the lessons according to the groups, a self-developed checklist and computer program were used to analyze the learning concentration level, activeness in learning participation, learning activity requirement variable, lesson atmosphere and (definitive, cognitive, meta-cognitive) interactions as the post-test.
The summary of the conclusions revealed through this study is as follow.
First, the learning concentration level was revealed to have no statistically significant differences between the two groups, and the fact that using contents based on augmented reality contributes in increasing the learning concentration level has been found.
Second, the learning participation was revealed to be higher in the group that utilized contents based on augmented reality compared to the traditional group. However, the aspect of behavioral activeness revealed to have high frequency but not statistically significant.
Third, although the learning activity requirement variable revealed to be relatively evenly distributed in the overall learning activities for the group that utilized contents based on augmented reality, the traditional group revealed to have emphasized more than half of the learning activities in teacher led learning activities. Therefore, the fact that utilizing contents based on augmented reality promote various activities for the learner was found.
Fourth, the lesson atmosphere was reveal to have significant difference in the group that utilized contents based on augmented reality in creativity, vitality, accuracy and amiability compared to the traditional group, and, among them, the scored for the area of creativity was revealed to be the highest.
Fifth, the definitive interaction revealed to be actively occurring in the group that utilizes contents based on augmented reality. Therefore, it has been found that definitive interactions actively occur in the group that utilized contents based on augmented reality since active knowledge acquiring activities occur through the self forming and operating of small groups in the learning processes of the learners in the group that utilized contents based on augmented reality compared to the traditional lesson.
Sixth, the cognitive interaction was revealed to be active in both groups, and there was no difference in the frequency between the groups. Therefore, the utilization of contents based on augmented reality did not reveal any differences in the aspect of cognitive interaction compared to the traditional group.
Lastly, the meta-cognitive interaction did not reveal a big difference between the two groups. However, the frequency of proactive presentations of the learners was revealed to be higher in the group that utilized contents based on augmented reality. Therefore, the utilization of the contents based on augmented reality did not reveal any difference in the aspect of meta-cognitive interaction compared to the traditional group.
