The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of social supports have on the life stress in juvenile students experience in their daily life from the perspective of stress intervening effect.
Especially this study will provide a practical instrument in verifying what kind effects the social support as a environmental resource provided to the juvenile has on the stress those young people get to daily encounter, and eventually in understanding the stress with the youth and coming up with an effective measure against it.
In respect of the need for this kind of study, this study is intended to determine the effects of social supports have on the life stress in juvenile students experience in their daily life from the perspective of stress intervening effect, and practically verify what kind effects the social support as a environmental resource provided to the juvenile has on the stress those young people get to daily encounter. In addition, it will identify the relation between the types of social support or its sources and the stress with those young students to provide fundamental data for understanding the stress with the youth and shaping some effective measures against it.
In regard to these purposes, the issues to be clarified in this study are as follows.
First, the differences between the stress caused by the background circumstances and the social support.
Second, the correlation between the stress caused by the background circumstances and the social support.
And finally, the mutual impacts between the stress experienced by the juvenile and the social support.
As a solution for these tasks of this study, a survey was conducted for 412 boy and girl students at 2 middle schools located in the city Iksan, Jeongbuk, with the responses of only 391 students considered into the study, except 21 respondents who participated in the survey in a passive attitude.
As a study method, we used a stress measuring instrument which was designed by Jeong Seon-hee.
The results of the study are as follows.
First, the total stress value of those students was higher than that of girl students. In the stress associated with the school and school performance, the girls indicated higher stress values than boys; in physical conditions, the boy students showed higher values. For the differences in social support depending on the background circumstances, the total value with the social support did not indicate any differences between the two gender groups; male students showed a significant difference in emotional and material supports; no significant difference in assessment and information supports. All the students showed significant differences in intimacy with their parents.
Second, the stress with the male students showed statistically greater differences with higher social supports, which was identified to have statistically a static relation with a sub-factors. There were no static relations between the students' stress and educational backgrounds of their parents while the correlation between the parents' educational backgrounds and the social supports indicated statistically a significant difference.
Finally, the observation the impacts of the social support on the entire stress of both male and female students resulted in some high values.
Consequently, the results of this study revealed the stress level in those young students depends on their gender, how intimate relationship they keep with their parents, and the social supports. The closer their relationships with their parents and the more social supports, the more vulnerable their stress becomes to static effects. The higher the education levels of their mothers, the higher their recognitions of the social supports. In particular, the stress with the middle school students seem to be more affected by the intervening effect when they are provided with a lot of social supports.
