The Korean mobile phone industry, which has been the leader of Korean exports overseas, is at a watershed moment as the mobile phone markets of other countries have reached maturity and the new 3G mobile phones are making a rapid advance. Inspired by the recent attention to the evolving Chinese mobile phone market as a potential new source of impetus for the Korean mobile phone industry, this study seeks to provide a responsive strategy that Korean mobile phone enterprises may use to adapt to these changes in the Chinese market based on a survey of actually Chinese mobile phone consumers.
The consumer survey revealed that Korean mobile phones fared worse than its competitors in the Chinese market in terms of price, as well as in quality and functionality. The responsive strategies that this study suggests for Korean enterprises to overcome these weaknesses in the existing, agricultural, and 3G mobile phone markets, respectively, can be summarized as follows:
First, in order to retain and expand their share in the existing mobile phone market, Korean enterprises must enhance the competitiveness of their products in three core areas: namely, pricing, marketing, and technological competitiveness. For price competitiveness, in particular, Korean enterprises should consider making strategic alliances with companies that possess the existing platforms and internationally outsourcing the production of its parts and finished products.
Second, for more effective marketing in the mobile phone markets of agrarian regions, Korean enterprises should develop low-function, low-priced mobile phones without unnecessary packaging or functions. Given the fact that consumers in the agrarian regions tend toward preference for Korean brand names and are more easily persuaded by their friends and neighbors, word-of-mouth marketing should be considered. Marketing efforts need to be concentrated in the "Policy of home appliances going to the countryside" and "The rising of central China" strategical regions.
Third, because 3G mobile phones carry quite sophisticated and diverse functions, no single company can produce all these functions by itself. Korean enterprises, therefore, need to focus on their core capacities and talents, compensating for what they lack by constructing strategic alliances with others. China conducted a trial commercialization of TD-SCDMA, the 3G standard in China, in April, 2008, as part of its efforts to facilitate the Beijing Olympics. China also promises to be the world’s largest, fastest-growing market. Korean enterprises, therefore, should consider the win-win strategy of making a partnership with China in terms of standardization.
The changes in the evolving Chinese mobile phone market can prove to be a crisis as well as an opportunity for Korean enterprises, depending on how Korean enterprises respond to them. Korean enterprises, therefore, must develop a suitable responsive strategy for these changes.
