This research has been proceeded in order to see if cyber network experience by the adolescent internet users have a positive influence on self-esteem development and interactive skills. I have distributed 130 questionnaires to local middle schools and high schools, total 520 questionnaires, near Kimpo city. We have collected total 480 questionnaires, eliminating those that have been answered with insincerity and which have shown inconsistency during coding.
The questions established to reach a research goal are listed below.
First, what is the difference between adolescents from local provinces and adolescents in the cities who have cyber network experience?
Second, how does internet using environment(using time, using period, and experience) effect adolescents self-respect and interactive skills?
Third, what is the distinction in self-respect and interactive skills, regarding individuals characteristics(Sex, social level, living environment)?
Fourth, what is the effect of cyber network experience in the adolescents development in social psychology development?
In order to provide hard evidence for this research, I have used the scale of Self-Esteem Inventory by Coopersmith(1967), which Kang Jong-Gu(1986) have standardized and have classified these into four smaller areas of 'self respect', 'relations with people', 'leadership and popularity' and 'self persistence'. Also, I have used Schutz's FIRO-B scale, which Yum Dong-su(2003) have acculturated using repeated measuring questions for the interaction measuring scale. This scale is to measure how adolescents, individuals, groups and team members intends to participate in peoples relationships.
In order to process reference, I have used SPSS/WIN(Ver.14.0K) program, and for the basic background information, Frequency Analysis process was used. Also, in order to see if there were any differences regarding self-esteem, interactive skills and individual characteristics in the adolescent's usage of internet, I have processed t-providence and One way ANOVA.
The results are as below.
First, more adolescents in cities have showed participation in cyber communities by regularly registering, uploading and chatting activities than the adolescents in other provinces.
Secondly, adolescents internet using hours that were under 2 hours showed high results in 'self-respect', 'relations with others' and 'self persistence'. Also, as adolescents have longer experience in using internet, 'self persistence' classification showed much higher results than others and those who use internet more after school and on holidays, classification of 'relations with others' and 'self persistence' have shown higher results. For interactive skills, there were no clear relations to the hour of internet usage and expression of affection for aspiration was highly influenced to those who had over 5 years of experience in internet usage.
Thirdly, by processing self-esteem and interactive skills with individual characteristics(Sex, social level, living environment), females tend to have higher level in both self-esteem and interactive skills. Those with high social levels have higher self-esteem as well. For the living environment classification, more adolescents living in the cities have shown slightly more self-esteem and interactive skills, compared to adolescents living in other provinces.
Fourthly, as the result of researching in influential relations between social psychology development of adolescents, who have experience in cyber network, more adolescents who were registered in cyber communities had higher levels. In addition, those who had regular participation history had higher levels in 'self-respect', 'leadership and popularity' and 'self persistence'. As more experience you gain from participating in cyber network activities, more positive effects, such as higher levels in 'relations with others', 'leadership and popularity' and the development of 'self-esteem' have shown, except for one, the 'expression of affection'.
The cyber network activities has now become a huge part in education, hobbies and special activities. This cyber space experience no longer secures regular people with ordinary relationships and ordinary life for adolescents. With a result that adolescents are gaining positive influences in self-esteem and interactive skills through cyber network activities, we foresee hopeful possibilities of developing more positive aspects in adolescents social psychology.
