Building on previous researches on the use of translation in English education, this paper aims to address the following research questions: first, what impact existing teaching ways have on our English education and why translation as a teaching tool is necessary on English education; second, what strategies can be employed to improve the quality of English education.
It is of notable interest that today's learning situation in class is different from current trend where it puts more emphasis on communication ability and instead, makes students be preoccupied with just good grades.
Although there are a host of scholars and translation strategies suggested, this thesis lays focus on the necessity of translation and translation strategies by reviewing and introducing Lavault and Durieux′s concept. The data that serves as a basis for the research comes from several English textbooks and weekly magazine for teens.
This dissertation comprises five chapters: Introduction (Chapter 1), Several Teaching and Necessity of Translation in English Education (Chapter 2), Comparison of Two Translation Ways (Chapter 3), Case Study of Mistranslation and Analysis of Translation Strategies (Chapter 4), and Conclusion (Chapter 5).
Chapter 1 deals with the aim and the motivation of the research, as well as the research questions and methodology, the review of previous studies and the anticipated contribution of the study. Chapter 2 provides recent trend of English education, and introduces a lot of existing teaching methods, and suggest the effectiveness and necessity of translation in English education. Chapter 3 deals with comparison of early translation strategies and newly attention-grabbing translation strategies, and concrete explanation on new translation strategies. Chapter 4 shows the case study on the mistranslation that disrupts communication-oriented teaching and provides three translation strategies to make up for. Chapter 5 summarizes the results of the study, acknowledges the limitations of the research and presents potential future research topics.
The author sincerely hopes the research will make great contributions to improvement of quality English education and triggering further discussion on translation strategies for effective English education.
