The purpose of this research was to identify effects of children's care-oriented morality and participation of disability awareness program on disability acceptance.
The research questions were 1) whether there were differences in children's disability acceptance according to personal background variables, 2) whether participation of disability awareness program brought differences in children's disability acceptance, 3) how care-oriented morality were related to children's disability acceptance.
Data was collected from 4 to 6th graders from elementary school in Cheong-ju city. Total sample size was 324. Data were analyzed with frequency, t-test, ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc test, Pearson correlation, multiple-regression, using SPSS 12.0 program.
The results of this research were as follows:
First, disability acceptance of children showed clear differences by grade level; 4th graders were likely to have higher scores in disability acceptance than 5th or 6th graders. In general, girls were likely to have higher scores in care-oriented morality than boys.
Second, disability acceptance of children who participated in inclusive classes and disability awareness programs, was clearly higher.
Third, based on the results from multiple-regression analysis, grade level, care-oriented morality, and disability awareness program participation had statistical significance explaning disability acceptance. This study, therefore, confirmed that the program participation as well as care-oriented morality had positive effects on disability acceptance.
In conclusion, inclusive class should be prepared and operated with disability awareness programs of higher quality and diversal contents, as well as children's morality.
