In this study, the realization aspects of Indirect Speech Acts(IDSA) in Korean and English were compared to clarify the reason why we use the method of IDSA despite we can perform speech acts directly.
Chapter Ⅰ presents the goal of this study and the overall direction of this study. By examining preceding works concerning the IDSA, the necessity of this study was confirmed.
In chapter Ⅱ, the concept of the IDSA was provided and the stand point about the range of the IDSA was set up. The argument were proceeded on the point of view that the IDSA is the subordinate category of the conversational implicature. From this point of view, only the utterances that show a discordance between expressed speech acts and intended speech acts are treated as IDSA. The characteristic of IDSA is the fact that intended speech act of the speaker is performed in a different type of speech act in the actual utterance. Therefore even if the propositional contents are different, the utterances that the external speech acts are accorded with the intended speech acts were not regarded as IDSA in this study.
In chapter Ⅲ, the scripts of Korean and English Tv drama which are the subjects of the analysis were presented. Also, the procedures of this study and the frames of the analysis which are the sentence types, the felicity conditions and the situation types were referred to.
Sentence types can be divided in to four classes ― declarative, interrogative, imperative and propositive. Generally, each sentence types perform specific speech acts such as ‘statement, question, order, proposal’. In consequence, the types of linguistic acts also can be simplified as [statement], [question], [order] and [proposal]. There is no separate sentence type of ‘propositive’ in English grammar, but if we consider the fact that the “sentence structure Let's” constantly plays a role of ‘propsitive’, the “sentence structure Let's” can be sorted as ‘propositive’.
The felicity conditions are established in Searle(1969). This study presented the felicity conditions of [statement], [question], [order] and [proposal], and selected the utterances that does not satisfy the felicity condition of that sentence type but satisfy the felicity condition of other sentence type as the subjects of the analysis.
The situations of conversations were divided into ‘normal situation’ and ‘conflict situation’ in this study. The situations in which the mental conflicts between the participants or the speaker's emotional conflict exist are classified as ‘conflict situation’ and the situations in which no conflicts exist are classified as ‘normal situation’. Such classification is to clarify more easily the intentions of the speakers who perform IDSA.
The aspects of IDSA in Korean and English were investigated in chapter Ⅳ which is the core part of this work. Common features and distinctive features between Korean and English IDSA were examined through the comparative study based on the situation types, intended speech acts and sentence types which perform IDSA. According to the research material, the major motives to perform IDSA were found to be ‘lessening the burden’ and ‘emphasizing’. The motive of ‘lessening the burden’ was more frequent in English and the motive of ‘emphasizing’ was more frequent in Korean. Compared to English, Korean showed more diversity in speech acts types which a specific sentence type can perform. This result tells that the relationship between sentence types and speech acts types is considerably flexible in Korean.
Chapter Ⅴ, as a conclusion of this study, summarized the above-mentioned discussion and made reference to more in-depth studies to be made about IDSA.
Because of the reason that performances and understandings of IDSA ultimately realize on the context of verbal communications, to infer the meanings of IDSA, the pragmatical factors should be considered. In this study, understanding the overall contexts of communications and the emotional states of the participants were possible by using the TV drama scripts as a research material. Hence, the significance of this study can be found in the respect of considering the speaker's intentions delivered through IDSA in relation to the situations in which IDSA is performed.
