The purpose of this study was to examine on the patients who are in hospice in order to ascertain their hope and resilience, as well as to ascertain the correlation between their hope and resilience.
This study was performed on 32 patients in 8 hospitals or hospice agencies and the data were collected from October 1 until November 15, 2008.
A research tool, designed by Miller and Powers (1988) and supplementally translated by Lee Mi-Ja (1992), was used in this study. Also, another research tool, designed by Wagnild and Young (1993) and supplementally translated by Kim Dong-Hee (2002), was used in order to evaluate the resilience of patients.
The collected data were analyzed by using SPSS 12.0 and the actual number, the percentage, the mean, the standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe’s test and Pearson correlation coefficient were carried out.
The results of this study came out as in the following.
1. The mean satisfaction of themselves, others and their lives was 59.25 (SD=13.29). The mean avoidance of the threatened hope was 28.71 (SD=4.93) and the mean expectation of the future was 16.87 (SD=3.41). In result, the mean hope indicated 102.31 (SD=11.54).
2. The underlying characteristics was 27.69 (SD=5.54). The characteristics of copying and the interpersonal characteristics were 35.47 (SD=5.79) and 30.28 (SD=4.5) respectively. In result, the mean resilience indicated 93.44 (SD=14.43).
3. Among general characteristics, the characteristics of coping (F=2.133, p=0.041; the subordinate category of resilience) showed a significant difference according to the economic conditions of patients. However, statistical significances were not observed between resilience and disease-related characteristics.
4. Statistic significances were not observed between hope and general characteristics. A statistic significance was observed between hope in actual residence and disease-related characteristics (t=-0.453, p=0.021). To be specific, statistic significances were observed in the satisfaction of themselves, others and their lives (t=-2.801, p=.009), the avoidance of the threatened hope (t=-2.937, p=.007) and the expectation of the future (t=-2.458, p=.021) respectively.
5. A statistic significance was observed between hope and resilience (r=.782 p=.000).
As a result of this study, it was found that hope and resilience are correlated with each other. In conclusion, it needs to make patients have hope to resile in order to elevate their resilience while they live.
