3D animation is being used as a creative art direction tool by deviating from mechanical and cold image. Especially, 3D animation is firmly establishing its footing by advancing various special effects and rendering technology as well as lighting and camera that are added to the strong point of 3D animation of the material quality image.
We are provided with various characters and abundant visual expressions as the result of remarkable advancement of such 3D animation and able to taste the experience of embodying the sense of existence of the characters and deeply carving in the expression while smiling and shedding tears at times in the world of fictional actual existence realized through such realistic expressions. Futhermore, the influence of 3D animation has unimaginable power and it is being smeared into our everyday lives as the image media that delivery the mechanism of experience such as TV, video, movie and computer are spreading and being commercialized very rapidly.
However, although diversified utilization and application of 3D animation where various image media are rampant is yielding various advantages such as the convenience in real life and the efficiency of information delivery, we are facing the circumstance of not being able to deny that computer games or exaggerated and inappropriate misuse in certain advertisements or videos are having bad effects of forming unwholesome atmosphere in the society on the whole.
Therefore, accurate understanding of 3D animation and the correct diagnosis of the influence it has can be seen as the subject that should be seriously considered prior to the repeated advancement and application of 3D animation. In this vein, this thesis seeks to approach from the following perspective for the two key words of '3D animation' and 'visual perceptual thinking during childhood' as the discussion will proceed with the title of 'the effect 3D animation has on the visual perceptual thinking of child'.
Namely, it seeks to awaken the understanding of animation itself and establish the location and meaning of 3D animation by retracing its origin and the history of development with holding the key that 3D animation is the ultimate achievement that has been realized through human's long yearning and intense desire for moving image. And although 3D animation is the product of total art activities that encompasses various fields such as image, sound, lighting, story and character, the visual perceptual elements of 3D animation will be analyzed through graphical technical content to reveal its characteristics by considering the fact that it is a visual perceptual information primarily.
In addition, the general characteristics of the visual perceptual thinking during childhood and its educational value will be examined using the visual perceptual thinking theory of Rudolf Arnheim that analyzes seeing as one of the most productive thinking activity of human as the index.
The development of the visual perceptual thinking and its value of a child in the growth stage is of utmost importance due to its limitless potential. Therefore, the opinion of emphasizing the importance of a more open education using various media in a wider area than the education in the frame of school in the education of children in the present society is becoming more vocal. From such perspective, the educational usefulness of 3D animation is very significant because 3D animation not only provides excellent visual perceptual information but also provides the invisible physical phenomenon repeatedly whenever needed on site as well as our internal phenomenon in almost realistic expressions thereby it can be said as an effective tool that can cultivate the imagination and creativity of children and even satisfy the thinking aspect.
However, misuse and abuse will bring forth excessive results no matter how useful of a medicine it is. Therefore, 3D animation should be equipped with the vision of the forward direction through a correction consideration of its characteristic as a medium along with the aspect of technological development.
The ultimate purpose of this thesis is also in being a pathfinder for searching for such direction. In this vein, this thesis seeks to proceed the discussion under the title of 'the effect 3D animation has on the visual perceptual thinking of child', and the reason of having put the focus of discussion of the visual perceptual thinking during childhood is from the following sense. Namely, although 3D animation is the outcome of the total art activity that encompasses various complex areas such as image, sound, lighting, story and character, the reason is because it is primarily received as a visual perceptual information and what's most sensitively and directly exposed to such information is none other than the visual perceptual thinking of pure children.
