The purpose of this research is to determine the significance of parents' attachment and support from the child's teachers and peers on the child's sense of happiness. For the purpose it was examined how a parent's attachment and social support for their child is reflected in their child's sense of happiness.
This study consists of 439 boys and girls in grades 4, 5 and 6 who were enrolled in an elementary school in Suncheon and 422 children from an elemantary school in Goheung.
Analysis was completed and compiled from 788 children. To guage the attachment between children and their parents was used a tool from Yoon So Young's (2001). For social support Han Mi Hyun's scale (1996) and for one's sense of happiness Lee Jeong Hwa's scale (2005) is used.
The results drawn by this research are listed below:
First, there was no difference between boys and girls in terms of the relation between the child's attatchment to parents and his/her sense of happiness except that girls were recognized to get more social support.
Second, results showed the closer the attachment to parents, teachers and peers, the higher score on the sense-of-happiness
scale for the student.
Third, there was the communication variable that caused a significant effect on the child's attatchment to his/her parents; besides the communication variable there was also the trust between mother and child that gave considerable effect to building up a sense of happiness for the child. In terms of social support peer, family and teacher support had a big effect on giving the child a sense of happiness; peer group support showed it had the most effect, while family support had a greater effect than teacher support which showed the least amount of effect.
This study showed intimate relations between the attachment of parents, peers and teacher and a sense of happiness. Especially, the children with frequent communication with their parents showed more positive results of happiness, so, parents should have more time and chances to have communication with their children in a respectable, trustful home atmosphere. This is essential to have an important effect on building up trust with their mothers. Therefore, it is reasonable that schools introduce and develop a realistic, parental education program to best utilize the relationship with their parents &social support in active way.
