The Purpose of this study lies in making the influence of economic stress on depression clear and how self-esteem moderate stress and depression. For the research, I delivered questionnaires to 245 women immigrants married to Korean men inhabiting in the western Kyeonggi Province and West District of Incheon City, to which 213 people properly responded. The survey was conducted for two weeks from April 11th to April 25th this year. I analysed the data using various methods such as frequency analysis, cross analysis, technical statistics analysis, analysis of group median and regression analysis through SPSS12.0.
Main points of the research are the following.
First, my research has shown that the economic conditions of the women immigrants, in general, are extremely low. 64.3% of the women immigrants households had an average monthly household income less than 2,000,000 KRW and 14.1% of the women immigrants households were in absolute poverty with an average monthly household income less than 1,000,000 KRW. Women immigrants household's average size was 3.76 people and their main source of income was mostly (83.6%) earned by themselves and their spouses.
Second, I measured the economic stress felt by the women immigrants using the IFDFW (InCharge Financial Distress /Financial Well-being) scale, which has gone through numerous verification processes in the United States for years. The survey results showed the women immigrants to have a mean index of 5.873, which means that the women immigrants recognize subjectively that they are under an average level of economic stress and an average level of economic well-being in spite of the objective poor economic conditions. However, 16.4% of the respondents revealed that they recognize that they are under a high level of economic stress and a low level of economic well-being.
Third, my research revealed that women immigrants' average monthly household income have a POSITIVE INFLUENCE on their subjective economic stresses. So, as the women immigrants' average monthly household income increases, the economic stress decreases and the economic well-being increases.
Fourth, BDI-Ⅱ(Beck Depression Inventory-Ⅱ)was used to measure the level of depression amongst women immigrants. The average level of depression amongst the respondents was 11.764. 92.5% of the women immigrants have shown a normal level of depression, but 7.5% of the respondents have shown a severe level of depression.
Fifth, I tried to chase the impact of economic stress on depression. Research results have shown that depression amongst women immigrants has a NEGATIVE CORRELATION with the IFDFW index. This means that, as economic stress increases and economic well-being decreases, the level of depression increases. In other words, we can say that economic stress has a POSITIVE INFLUENCE on the depression amongst women immigrants.
Sixth, my research revealed that the average self esteem index of women immigrants is 2.7151. This results shows that the women immigrants have an average level of self esteem.
Seventh, I try to make it clear whether self-esteem has influences on the level of depression or not. However, in spite of various efforts, my research results indicate that it's not evident whether self-esteem can moderate the strength of depression because they differ according to the methods used to clarify the assumption. This led me to the conclusion that it's NOT PROPER to report that RSE index, which shows the level of self esteem, has any correlation with the BDI-Ⅱ index and self-esteem has the effect of moderating the level of depression.
The main results of this study are as follows. Women immigrants's economic situations including average monthly income have influence on the economic stress level measured by the IFDFW index. Such economic stress as is measured by the IFDFW index has a meaningful relationship with the level of depression amongst women immigrants measured by BDI-Ⅱ. In other words, economic stress has an effect on the mental health of the respondents. However, at present, we can not conclude that women immigrant's self-esteem influences on the level of depression as a mediator. The research results showed contrary outcomes according to the various measures.
