ABSTRACT
This paper is the product of a researcher who has experienced the rapid growth of beverage market in China as an employee of a Korean beverage manufacturer and tried to develop a strategy to make a dent in the Chinese market by identifying the characteristics of the local beverage market and analyzing cases of Korean beverage brands operating in China. The Korean beverage market volume will grow 3~4% to KRW 3.7 trillion in 2009 from the previous year after jumping from KRW 2.5 trillion in early 2000 to KRW 3.6 trillion in 2008. After contracting for 2 consecutive years, 2005 and 2006, and rebounding to 1% and 3% growth rates in 2007 and 2008 respectively, the market will become more active amid neck-and-neck competition, as traditional beverage markers keep trying to entrench their presence and create new market segments while dairy product makers and pharmaceutical manufacturers beef up their marketing drives. By staging aggressive marketing strategies, Woongjin Food Co., Ltd. developed and marketed a series of new beverage products and grew to compete on par with existing major market players such as Lotte Chilsung Beverage Co., Ltd., Haitai Beverage Co., Ltd. Coca-Cola Korea, Co., Ltd. and Donga-Otsuka, Co., Ltd. in just 5 years. Woongjin Food that entered the domestic beverage market as a latecomer in 1995 has jumped to claim the No.4 status in the local market by differentiating itself with new breeds of beverage products made from jujube, rice and plum and set its food in the Chinese market in an effort to find a new growth driver elsewhere other than the Korea market which had already matured to the point of saturation. Woongjin's revenue in China grew from KRW 3.8 billion in 2007 to KRW 8.9 billion in 2008, behind which the growing sales of 'Woongjin Nature Aloe' in Fujian Province, China played a key role. Out of annual revenue of KRW 8.9 billion, the Chinese market accounted for KRW 5.5 billion. This paper analyzes the rapid revenue growth of Woongjin Food in China from the late 2008 and benchmarks beverage markets in other parts of China to understand the propensity of Chinese customers and distribution channel structure in an effort to develop a viable strategic model built on unique requirements of the Chinese market which will provide reference to Korean beverage manufacturers interested in advancing into the market. Among so many new beverage products marketed in China every year, just a few end up with success. There may be several conditions that a new beverage product must satisfy in order to succeed in the market and the most important one is such that a new product must cater for consumer needs. To be more specific, product not only meet the needs and desires of consumers but also incorporate novel ideas to deliver value to them, which requires beverage manufacturers to identify values that mean much to consumers and develop a product that can differentiate itself from conventional ones by offering a unique value. For a beverage product to succeed, technology, market conditions and internal corporate factors are also important in addition other factors relating to consumers. Notably, as product life cycle gets shorter in many cases, time-to-market and timely product release also turn out to be significant factors. Therefore, this paper describes a strategy for Korean beverage manufacturers to make a dent into the rapidly growing Chinese market with details derived from reference case studies and provides analysis of current status and forecast of future trends involving both Korean and Chinese beverage makers to suggest a success model for Korean beverage manufacturers that intend to operate in the Chinese market.
