Among elementary music class components, instrumental performaces are students' most favorite part and what students are interested in. It is important to experience and learn rhythm which form the basis, using intriguing musical instruments in elementary school days. It is effective for students to learn rhythmic lessons using percussion instruments that are easy to play and have everyday sound.
However, problems are being found in reality: lacking lesson material, musical instruments, students' boredom and lack of concentration through learning processes of formal music classes. Because of these reasons, it is necessary to use percussion instruments which have not been played except for existing percussion instruments and different instruments which will draw students interests.
In this study, groups were divided into two and clapping which is an existing method and percussion instruments were applied to learning processes for each group of fifth and sixth elementary school students. The effect of the methods were compared and this study is aimed at presenting a desirable class lesson plan analysing percussion instruments.
Research contents are as follow.
First, percussion instruments were listed and meaning of rhythm and importance of rhythmic lesson were evaluated. In addition, teaching methods of Carl Orff were investigated and the factors affecting
attention getting and so on were explored.
Second, a lesson plan of rhythm were divided into four classes, and the program for each class was composed in phases, and they were applied to a lesson plan which is shown in this study.
Third, a lesson plan of 4th class was applied to fifth and sixth grade elementary school students for a month by dividing them into two groups (clapping and percussion instrument use) For the two group, class contents and plan were applied equally, and only the methods for rhythmic lesson, clapping and percussion instruments, were the only difference.
Fourth, by using pre survey and post survey, this study is not onlyfocused on students' rhythm but also differences in students' understanding and interests were analyzed.
In this study, students showed better understanding and more interests by using percussion instruments in their rhythmic lessons. On the other hand, study groups which used existing method
of clapping showed lower understanding, less interests. Therefore,
it can be analyzed that the result ultimately increased concentration and this increased effect of learning.
Above all, effective rhythmic lesson require teachers' endless research and efforts. Teachers should assist students to have moreinterests and to be more actively involved in music classes.
