The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of assertive training program on assertiveness, self-efficacy and interpersonal relationship in hospital nurses.
The study employed a nonequivalent control group with pre-post test design. The participants were 25 hospital nurses; 12 in experimental group and 13 in control group. The assertive training program was carried out a 90-minute-session per week for 10 weeks from January 8th to March 12th, 2009 in experimental group. The control group did not receive the assertiveness training program.
The outcome variables of assertiveness (Ha, 1983), self-efficacy (Yang, 1998) and interpersonal relationship (Jen, 1994) were measured before the first and after the last experiments in both experimental and control groups.
Data were analyzed by SPSS-Win 12.0 for windows program. To examine homogeneity for two groups, Fisher's exact test, χ2-test and Mann-Whitney U test were used. To test the study hypotheses, repeated measure ANOVA, Friedman test and Mann-Whitney U test were used.
The study results were as below;
1. The scores of assertiveness in experimental group increased significantly higher than control group (F=9.885, p=.005).
2. The scores of self-efficacy in experimental group increased significantly higher than control group (F=6.993, p=.014).
3. The scores of positive interpersonal relationship in experimental group increased significantly higher than control group (F= .811, p<.001).
In conclusion, the assertive training program can be used as an effective nursing intervention for hospital nurses to learn the positive way expressing their opinions, to promote self-efficacy, and to build positive interpersonal relationship. Moreover, through this program hospital nurses may be more active and productive in their working environments.
