Today things change day after day, and people live in the flood of information thanks to the advancements of media including the Internet.
Leading such a busy life, modern people want to find what's needed for them in the fastest and easiest manner based on diverse information graphics. This study set out to search for directions in the development of newspaper design as well as newspaper pages based on information graphics, which used various graphical elements for page design. It also aimed to analyze the influences of diagrams in economy sections, which started to attract much attention from the readers during a recession, on the readers and to examine diagrams capable of communicating with the readers by investigating the connections between diagrams and readability.
An economy section is filled of difficult articles and lacks visually incredible photos, being very difficult to design. Articles usually present all kinds of numbers and statistics and thus can easily be ignored by the readers. The investigator compared and analyzed good and bad cases of information graphics in an economy section. The results are as follows; first, illustrations that have nothing to do with the article can hinder the readers from understanding it.
Second, colors introduced in a diagram or chart with no specific meaning can seem proper as design elements but may distract the readers' sight.
Third, too much use of letters can instill a vague fear for a professional area called economy among the readers.
Fourth, too big changes to information graphics should be deterred to take into consideration the regular readers and maintain the identity of an economy section.
Fifth, photos have positive impacts by stimulating the readers' interest but should be used with information graphics such as diagrams considering the character of an economy section so that it can serve its purposes as an economy section fully. And finally, the designer should accurately understand that the article is trying to convey and express it implicatively in designing information graphics.
Thus the designer should be more creative but be careful not to disturb the identity of the entire newspaper. The design should help to maintain the identity of an economy section, implicatively express the message of an article, and help the readers grasp what the article is trying to deliver. Thus I explained the theoretical background of information graphics and investigated the ways to promote the readers' understanding through information graphics that's easily recognizable. In other words, I suggested the ways to promote smooth communication between the readers and the newspaper.
For more accurate analysis, I conducted a survey on the impacts of information graphics among a group of adults that read newspapers.
I then reviewed changes to economy sections in domestic and foreign newspapers by the periods and examined what's required from a newspaper designer in the 21st century.
Recognizing the shift from newspapers to read to newspapers to see today, I analyzed if diverse information graphics used in an economy section could implicatively express what the article was trying to convey.
In addition, I analyze the cases of newspapers that failed to maintain a consistent identity due to excessive use of information graphics for differentiation from other newspapers and absence of art director and search for improvement directions.
