Korean wine market has rapidly developed in quality and quantity after liberalization of wine imports in 1987. And it came up to the new market of wine providers in the whole world.
Recently in particular, while the wine takes a place as the element of gift for various events and anniversary recently, it is not simple alcoholic beverage, popular consumptive culture of wine is diffusing trend. Though various wine related researches are recently progressing in the national with the change of this kind of market, researches at the various point of view are still insufficient.
Thus, this research was proceeded in order to find how peripheral cues of label design of wine influenced on the preference and purchasing intention of consumers based on Elaboration Likelihood Model(ELM) of Petty & Cacioppo according to the type of consumer.
Firstly, characteristics of consumer were classified through the theory such as attitude of consumer, involvement, and etc. based upon monographic publication, paper, and etc. Furthermore, general understanding about the wine, central cues and peripheral cues of the label were considered.
Secondly, according to the relative importance of central and peripheral cues of the wine label, 3 experimental stimulants were produced. The attitude and purchasing intention of consumer were surveyed according to the purchase motivation of consumer (for oneself, or for present), involvement (high- involvement consumer, low-involvement consumer), and appeal type(emotional consumer, rational consumer).
Research subjects were 170 men and women in their late twenties-late forties living in Seoul · Kyeonggi area.
SPSS ver 13.0 statistical program was used for data analysis. Frequency analysis was performed for demographic factors of the subjects, and for validity verification, factor analysis was performed. Cronbach's Alpha was calculated in order to verify reliability of measuring tool and variables.
Descriptive analysis for analyzing variables distribution, cross analysis for difference, and regression analysis for analyzing the influence of preference to the label design of wine on the purchasing behavior were performed.
Summary of this research result is as follows ;
Firstly, in the case of purchasing wine for oneself, purchasing intention and the preference was higher in information-centered label of wine, and it was higher in image-centered label when the wine was purchased for present. Through this, central cue was exposed to have positive (+) effect in case of purchasing for oneself, and peripheral cue had positive (+) effect when wine was purchased for present.
Secondly, it was shown that high-involved consumer had higher preference and purchasing intention to the information-centered label of wine, and the preference and purchasing intention of low-involvement consumers were higher in the image-centered label. It was proved to be samely applied to the design of label that high-involvement consumers formed the attitude through central path and low-involvement consumers formed through peripheral path mainly in the Elaboration Likelihood Theory of Petty and Cacioppo.
Thirdly, the preference and purchasing intention of rational consumers were higher in the information-centered label, and that of emotional consumers were higher in the image-centered label. It was proved to be samely applied to the design of wine label that relying attitude on the cognitive response was highly shown as consumer's cognitive needs was higher, and feeling and emotion resulted from the image were formed highly as consumer's cognitive needs was lower.
In conclusion, it was found that the wine label had the significant effect on the wine purchasing intention of consumers, and the image of wine and peripheral element had relations with favorable impression, preference, and purchasing intention. It is considered that purchasing attitude can be changed through utilizing peripheral cues of the label design of wine. And studying the influence of label of wine, typography or image, and etc. as variables on the purchasing behaviour can be considered as meaningful research.
