Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of an empowerment program for persons with mental illness on empowerment, self-efficacy, and interpersonal relationships. Method: The research design was a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design as a quasi-experimental study. The subjects of this study were selected from persons with mental illness at S hospital in D city and P hospital in K province. They were all 43 subjects, 22 for an experimental group and the other 21 for control group. The period of this study was from January 2nd to January 30th in 2009. Data were analyzed by using SPSS WIN 11.5 program with χ2 test, t-test, and independent sample t-test. Results: There was a significant change in scores of empowerment, self-efficacy, and interpersonal relationships in an experimental group before and after treatment, which were significantly different from those in the control group. Conclusion: The empowerment program was effective in improving empowerment, self-efficacy, and interpersonal relationships for persons with mental illness. Therefore, the empowerment program would be contributed to the nursing intervention of persons with mental illness.
