The purpose of this study was to determine the mediating effects of juveniles' stress coping methods on the correlation between their perceived teacher-student relationship and their adaptation to school life and thereby, provide for some basic data useful to development of desirable teacher-student relationship programs as well as some counseling strategies to help them cope with their stress actively and adapt themselves to their school life. For this purpose, the following study points were set up;First, would teacher-student relationship, students' stress coping methods and adaptation to their school life differ depending on their gender and school grades? Second, how would juveniles' perceived teacher-student relationship be correlated with their stress coping methods and adaptation to their school life? Third, would juveniles' stress coping measures have some mediating effects on the correlation between teacher-student relationship and their adaptation to school life?In order to find the answers to the above questions, the researcher sampled 450 middle and high school students (250 boys and 200 girls). This study used three research tools: Teacher-Student Relationship Scale developed by Ji Eun-rim, et. al., (2003), Stress Coping method Scale translated by Kim Jeong-hee (1987) and School Adaptation Scale invented by Kim Yong-rae (1993). The data collected were processed using the SPSS 15.0 program for t-test, and Pearson's correlation coefficients as well as using the AMOS for analysis of the structural equation model. The data were collected from June 4 through June 18, 2008.The results of this study can be summarized as follows;First, boys perceived their relationship with teachers more positively than girls, coping with their stresses more actively in a problem-solving way, while being more adapted to their school life. On the other hand, high school students perceived their relationship with teachers more positively than middle school students, coping with their stresses more actively, while being more adapted to their school life.Second, as a result of analyzing the correlation among teacher-student relationship, students' stress coping methods and their adaptation to school life, it was found that the three variables were correlated positively with each other mostly in both terms of total scores and sub-variables.Third, as a consequence of analyzing the mediating effects of stress coping methods on the correlation between teacher-student relationship and students' adaptation to their school life, it was disclosed that the correlation between teacher-student relationship and students' adaptation to their school life was partially but significantly mediated by students' stress coping methods. In other words, it was confirmed that students' positive stress coping methods had the mediating effects on the relationship between teacher-student relationship and students' adaptation to their school life. Namely, the better the teacher-student relationship was, students would use stress coping methods more, being more adapted to their school life. And the more the students used stress coping methods, they were being more adapted to their school life. The above findings may well be meaningful because they provide for more process-wise and dynamic information relevant to students' adaptation to their school life by suggesting the mechanism that teacher-student relationship is equated with students' stress coping and thereby, help to understand our juveniles' adaptation to their school life more in-depth. All in all, in order to help our juveniles adapted more to their school life, the results of this study suggest that it is necessary to improve teacher-student relationship and develop personal resources helpful to students for their active control of and coping with various in-school stresses.
