This study was conducted to analyze the level of empathy and social maturity of elementary school mid grades and elementary school upper grades by gender and age to provide basic information necessary for empathy education in elementary schools.
For this purpose, the following study topics were selected:
First, does the level of empathy vary for elementary school mid grades and elementary school upper grades by gender and age?
Second, does the level of social maturity vary for elementary school mid grades and elementary school upper grades by gender and age?
Third, what is the relativity between the level of empathy and the level of social maturity?
Based on the findings of this study, the following have been concluded:
First, the level of empathy was higher among upper grade students than lower grade students and among female students than male students. Significant differences in expressive elements seem to be closely related to students' linguistic developments. However, considering that students of different age and sex showed no significant differences in cognitive and emotional elements, they would probably need impressive education that touches the heart and a social ambience that is less competitive and warmer.
Second, upper grade students were more socially mature than lower grade students. Considering that upper grade students had higher or better social competence and interpersonal skills, it was found that upper grade students can be more socially adaptive for friendlier personal relationships. This indicates that peer relations become more important in upper grades. Therefore, schools should provide more opportunities for students to develop good relationships and grow into more socially adaptive beings.
Third, the level of sympathies had a positive relationship with social maturity. Social maturity is closely related to empathy. This tells us that homes and schools can assist students' social maturity by offering empathy training. As competitive atmospheres in homes, schools, and the society interfere with students' social maturity, we could need to be considerate and effortful to help students improve the level of empathy at homes and schools.
