This study aims to analyze mathematics gifted student's independent research performance ability and to investigate teacher's recognition and the reality on independent research, and to find out the teacher's role in each procedure necessary for math gifted student's independent study so as to help them grow research ability. Followings are the research questions for such aims above:
1. How are math gifted student's independent research performance ability and the teacher's recognition and the reality on independent research?
2. What are the procedure and teacher's role required for math gifted student's independent research performance?
In the study of literature, independent research related elements were reviewed from various gifted curriculum model as well as common and general procedure that many scholars suggested.
Survey research was used to comprehend the math gifted student's independent research performance ability, and the teacher's recognition and the reality on this and case study was used to analyze the teacher's role at each step of math gifted student's independent research performance.
Following is the result of the research from analysis of collected data:
Math gifted student's independent research performance ability is as low as 1.5 in a sub category where 3 is the perfect score. The difference between the student's group that has experienced the gifted program for about a year and the one for about two years was not meaningful at 0.05 level of significance. The difference between student's group that has experienced the independent research performance and the one who has not was not meaningful at 0.05 level of significance. This seems to be caused by the fact that it was provided as homework without a careful plan and teacher's guide.
Teachers for math gifted students did not have independent research teaching experience, and the lack of training for independent research caused the teachers to be unskilled at independent research teaching method. Student's product was mainly summaries or summaries at deepened level based on the gifted program that students experienced and were offered as the form of homework, and the product was displayed and presented by some students when necessary .
The performance procedure of independent research was taught with 10 steps; introducing independent research, choosing a topic, making a research question, reviewing literature, collecting data, analyzing data, making product, sharing data, evaluating research, however, such procedure can be different according to the paradigm of research question.
Autonomy and self-understanding were important for gifted students to grow into active learners and active researchers, and teacher's interest and support for student's research played a role in facilitating the research process of students.
More research is required in following areas;
Case study to evaluate student's research performance ability during independent research, study about the training course for teachers of math gifted program on developing research skill and developing creative product, and study about the independent study for general students through compacting curriculum.
