Parents are the initial environment which an infant experiences and they have the most effective power on education. Environment and educational experience during infancy have a tremendous influence on several aspect after growing. Especially, educational circumstances including mother's attitude have a enormous effect on infant's growth and development. E.B. Hulrock(1972) reported that among parenting environment, mother's parenting attitude has the greatest impact on development of their infant's social behavior and attitude.
However, in reality of 21st century, parenting environment is not enough for bringing up children well. In other words, with changes of housewife's desire for self-growth and social phenomenon, mothers feel many difficulties acting as good parent. The research verifies the results of mother's parenting attitude and children's behavior after practicing STEP parenting program.
The themes of the study are that
1. What does STEP program affect to the parenting-attitude of mother?
2. What does STEP program affect behaviors of infant?
The subjects of investigation for the research are randomly selected among mothers who has three, four, five years old children, who is educated in S kindergarten located in P area, Ulsan, which are organized as a test group which are composed by 15 people and a management group of 15 people, and then the investigation was executed the order of a pretest, a experiment and a posttest.
As tools for this research, "a diagnosis test of children with mother" is selected ,which is standardized in domestic and written by Oh-sun(1965) for measuring parenting-attitude of mother tool for measurement. In addition, what is called the model of Schaefer which are focused on Love-Rejection, Self-Management attitude, was used by connecting sentences in Maternal Behavior Research Instrument "MBRI" ,dividing ten infrastructures which Hwang Ok-Ja (1987) employed, and conferring Won Ji-Hyun(2008)'s questionnaire. The means of measuring infant-behaviors were the instrument which Fears invented, focusing on goal of 4 wrong infant-behavior Dreikurs presented and which Hwang Ok-Ja made ,based on APACBS which Mckay invented.
For steps of this research, we executed STEP(Systematic Training For Effective Parenting) program, which is written by Don Dinkmeyer and Gary D. Mckay and is translated by Lee Kyoung-Woo, 9 times for 9 weeks and pre & post inspection-means with the parenting-attitude of mother and the evaluation-behavior of infant to detect the analogous difference between two groups, nevertheless, we did not execute STEP program for management-groups, but kindergarten parent education data was sent, once a month.
We verified the difference between before and after of the parenting-attitude of mother and the behavior of infant who experienced STEP program in the equivalent condition, behaviors p<.01, p<.05, p<.001, and we executed t-test, which is verification of average-difference, as statistics management by using SPSSWIN 12.0 program.
The results of this research are below.
First, in the case of influence on the parenting-attitude of mother by STEP program, we discovered that STEP program has an effect on mother to get positive parenting because the parenting-attitude of mother in experiment-group hourly shows more obvious difference than management-groups after executing STEP program .
Second, in the case of influence on the behavior of infant by STEP program, we discovered that STEP program has an effect on infant to get positive behavior because the behavior of infant in STEP program hourly shows more obvious difference than management-groups after executing STEP program .
The results of this research above do not only verify the advanced changes of parenting-attitude of mother throughout STEP program, but also verify the importance of parenting through affirmatively changed infant's behavior.
Moreover, this research has a great significance because mothers who send their children to the infant educational institution affirmatively realize the importance of parenting-attitude and behavior of infant as letting them feel interest in STEP program constituted suitably to our circumstance. We could expect that effects in the infant educational institution.
