Middle-aged people have greater economic capability, higher social ranks and bigger domestic and social roles than other classes. In the meantime, a lot of social problems increase their stress and cause types of health-related problems while their deteriorating health status, in turn, pushes them into some early-senescence problems like emotional change, behavioral change from depression, declined morale, feeling of helplessness and isolation, etc.
To solve these problems has a direct connection to their quality of life. The quality of life can be defined as the subjective well-being seen in terms of human values. Until now, the interest in the quality of life has been very shallow with the majority of researches upon the factors influencing it focusing on demographic variables such as sex, age, education status, economic status, religion, marital status, etc. Furthermore, studies on their leisure-time activity and quality of life have been very scarce although the latter is greatly influenced by the former.
Participation in leisure-time activity rids middle-aged people of their social or psychological anxiety and repression while satisfying their desire of compensation. Also, related programs reduce the aggressive impulse which can be brought about to them by the highly-industrial and rapidly-changing social conditions. Modern societies have very complicated networks of individuals, schools, work places and other numerous social groups. Leisure-time activity can function as a remedy to heal the nervousness, anxiety and fear induced from the complicated relations.
In this context and under the hypothesis that leisure-time activity and quality of life are somewhat connected, this study is to analyze the relation between middle-aged people?s leisure-time activity and quality of life. As an exploratory research method, philological research was made while some of those men and women residing in Seoul, whose ages range from 40 and 64, were surveyed for empirical analysis. The analysis focuses mainly on the relation between leisure-time activity and the quality of life.
According to the result, there is a difference between those who engage in regular leisure-time activity and those who do not, with the quality of life of the former turning out higher than that of the latter. Also, how much one is satisfied with his or her leisure-time activity has something to do with mid-life quality of life, showing a positive influence. In other words, those who have a higher level of self-achievement via leisure-time activity, engage in more active social and environmental exchanges with others via leisure-time activity and take a higher level of role initiative tend to have a higher level of quality of life. When each type of leisure-time activity is considered, participatory activity like sports tends to contribute more to the quality of life. As such, it is an important task to prepare enough spaces for sports and recreation activity, which is rarely done by an individual as it needs a large space.
Thus, the central or local governments should take the lead in providing what are needed while trying to develop leisure-time activity programs and promoting middle-aged people?s participation. The quality of life is influenced not just by leisure-time activity but by a variety of factors ? demographic variables, societal variables, economic variables, health, etc. Hence, policy development for an increased quality of life should be backed up by some consideration into related factors.
