The crisis of morality in the modern society resulted from the fall of the traditional sense of values and the absence of a new sense of values to substitute the old one. The remarkable development in scientific technology has given rise not only to an abundance of materials, but also to a confusion of a sense of values by extreme egotism, materialism, and the separation between material cultures and spiritual ones, and is furthermore resulting in an inversion of values. Nowadays, more and more adolescents are involved in delinquencies and deviations, due to the confusion caused by the rapid social changes, and are wandering in the moral disorder prevailed in our society.
Above all, we must pay attention to whether or not the moral education in school plays its role in establishing a moral sense of values and in carrying out moral exercises in this social chaos. Now the age of a juvenile delinquency, such as violence in school, smoking, Internet addiction, bullying, abscondence, and so on, is getting younger. Although the society changes rapidly and a sense of values undergoes a change, the current moral education simply delivers and hampers home the particular moral principles, and the conveyance of conventional morality has reached the limits. The moral education is in a situation where it can't be appropriately executed because it makes too much of the theory-oriented cramming education. However, with all the facts that we can't directly deal with the moral deeds during moral studies in class, it is taking its role in triggering one's motive, supposing it can eventually lead to an act indirectly or through some changes.
Hereupon, this thesis has proposed 'Mind Training' to complement and substitute a wide range of moral education, which is unequal to an on-spot moral class in school.
In chapter 1, Durkheim who has had a great influence on a modern moral education and the theoretical backgrounds of a moral education method by L.Kohlberg and Lickona were examined. In addition, we have studied the way in which the moral education method by Durkheim, L.Kohlberg, and Lickona is being applied to on-spot moral education in Korea and the essential clues which the mind training require.
In chapter 2, principles and purposes, methods and focuses, the general contents in relation to mind training as a moral education method, are being examined. Also, the relationship between moral education and mind training is being studied.
In chapter 3, through actual cases of mind training for students(elementary, middle, and high school students), teachers, and parents, we have looked into the moral changes brought up by the specific methods of mind training to teachers and parents in school, let alone students.
In chapter 4, A detailed statistical study by a questionnaire was carried out so as to see the effect of mind training. The contents of the questionnaire is composed of changes by moral elements, changes in personal relationship, and, lastly, the effect of mind training. The changes by moral elements were these; the establishment of a sense of values(recognition of a sense of one's own worth, recognition of a future), emotional stabilization(anger-rage management, gratitude, happiness), acceptance of the standards of social culture(a sense of responsibility, consideration, school adjustment). As to the changes in personal relationship, the relationship between a family, teachers, and friends is studied. Lastly, the effects of mind training were studied by being arranged into three categories; the moral education for the experiences of truth, realistic training of morality, and the method of simple and convenient moral education.
In chapter 5, the preparation by the teachers and of educational conditions were being considered as a part of education plans for customized mind training, and the rules of mind training on the basis of principles were proposed by means of a diary, and question and answer.
Mind training is a moral education based upon the rule of Heaven which, through an actual training of all people in a simple and convenient way, allows the human beings to experience the truth of space and awake to the nature. We can found it through the main texts of this study that mind training, as a moral education method, is a true and realistic method for a moral education, which is not to merely change the moral thoughts or behaviors, but to change the quality of existences and show the directions for a life of parents as well as students and teachers.
