뉴 에이지 運動과 修練文化 = The New Age Movement and Culture of Training

국문 초록 (Abstract)

뉴 에이지 운동과 수련문화는 이 시대를 대표하는 새롭고도 막강한 대중문화의 성격으로 자리하고 있다. 그러나 뉴에이지 운동이 무엇이며 수련문화는 도대체 무엇인지 그 내용을 구체적으로 알고 있는 사람은 드물다.
이러한 이유는 뉴에이지 운동의 성격이 포괄적이기도 하지만 뉴에이지의 현상은 하나의 흐름으로 나타나는데 원인이 있기 때문이며 이는 그 시대의 사회적 상황과 매우 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있다는 뜻이다. 즉 18세기말부터 20세기까지는 하나의 사회 구조에 불만을 표출하며 문화적 형태로 나타나기도 했었으며 삶의 수준과 관계되어서 자아에 대한 탐구나 건강에 대한 관심으로 나타나기도 했었고 우주와의 공동체적 운명이라는 의식으로 환경보호와 사회 개혁을 위한 의식운동으로 이어지기도 하면서 인간의 삶과 목적에 대한 가치관의 변화가 나타나기도 하였는데 이러한 현상의 변화를 논리적 개념으로 설명하기에는 매우 벅찬 과정이 숨겨져 있기 때문이다.
그것은 뉴에이지 운동의 핵심으로 알려진 요가와 선 그리고 단전호흡법의 이름으로 불리는 수많은 수행법들이 일원론으로 부터 영지주의 및 신플라톤주의와 신비주의에 이르는 사상적 배경을 등에 업고 발현된 현상으로 역사와 문화에서부터 철학적 과학적 종교적 요인들이 혼합되어 퓨전과 패러디 되는 현상이다. 이러한 의미에서 뉴에이지운동과 수련문화가 갖는 혼합주의적 연관성의 원인과 성격 특징 그리고 확산배경을 통해서 뉴에이지와 수련문화의 의미를 살펴보고자 하였는데 결론은 뉴에이지는 인류의 역사가 존립하는 한 시대적 요구에 어떻게 부응하며 부합될 것인가의 문제이지 결코 중단되지 않고 지속될 것으로 사료된다. 다만 우리의 개인과 사회를 위한 올바른 방향성을 어떻게 정립하고 제시하느냐의 문제일 뿐이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

New Age Movement and discipline culture are new and powerful icons of the contemporary popular culture. The concepts of those, however, are not concretely recognized by ordinary people.
The reasons why people don't concretely recognize the concepts are that the Movement has comprehensive nature and it is a kind of trend. It means that it is closely related to the social situations of the times. That is, it appeared as a kind of cultural forms to express social complaints about the social structure from the late 18C to 20C, as concerns about ego or well-being, and as movements for environment protection and social reform caused by sharing mind of common destiny with the universe. In the course, there have been changes in value systems about human life and its purpose. These changes of phenomena are difficult to describe with logical concepts.
Many discipline methods including Yoga, Zen, and hypogastric breathing, which are known as the essential part of New Age Movement, are based upon different background, such as monism, gnosticism, Neo-Plantonism and mysticism, and furthermore, they are intermixed with the factors of history, culture, philosophy, science and religion, resulting in fusions and parodies. In this point, this article tries to find the meaning of New Age Movement and discipline culture by examining the reasons, natures, and characteristics of correlations mentioned above, and backgrounds of distributions, of the Movement and the culture. The result is that New Age Movement will exist for ever as long as human being exists, corresponding to the demands of the times, and that the matter remains how desirably we can orient the Movement and the culture for us and our society.
