The purpose of this study is to investigate middle school students' perception of English punctuation and to suggest the improvement of English textbooks dealing with English punctuation. For this purpose, several researches were carried out. First, the experience of learning the six English punctuations―the period, the comma, the colon, the semicolon, the dash, the question mark―are studied. Second, research was done regarding learning punctuation marks placement in sentences. Third, research on writing down the punctuation mark's meaning and explaining the punctuation mark's usage was performed. Finally, in order to find out how many students can use each punctuation mark, 72 questions consisting of 29 periods, 26 commas, 4 colons, 4 semicolons, 5 dashes, and 4 question marks are supplied as the way of filling proper punctuations in blanks. To figure out if this is adequate, the research was done by 214 middle school students who are in their 2nd and 3rd grade in Daejon, South Korea.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, about 50 % of the students have had experiences to learn English punctuation marks. Second, the greater part of the 50% learned English punctuations at school while others went to educational institutes. Third, most students can write down the usage of the period, the comma, the question marks since they are familiar with them but don't know as well when using the colon, the semicolon, and the dash punctuation marks. Fourth, except for the dash mark, the knowledge of punctuations―the period, the comma, the colon, and the semicolon―do not have any relation with the correct answer. This implies that although most students know the usage of English punctuations, they do not use the punctuations properly in the context.
Teachers and students mainly depend on English textbooks during the class hours while at school, therefore, it is necessary to improve these English textbooks. Various kinds of English textbooks dealing with English punctuations must supply the way of learning English punctuations in a more fun and easy way that is systematic and concrete. If well-constructed textbooks are provided, students will have more opportunities to improve their English ability.
