Purpose: The aim of this study was to examined an association between body mass index and prevalence of dental caries among early adolescence after accounting for snack and beverage intake.
Methods: First grade of one middle school in Daegu city was conveniently selected for the cross-sectionally study. Oral exam, calculated of body mass index(BMI) from hight and weight, and snack and beverage intake pattern from food frequency questionnaire(FFQ) were performed among 322 students who consented this survey. Wilcoxon's rank sum test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and multivariate logistic regression analysis were applied to assess association between BMI and dental caries.
Results: The participants, who were low socio-economic status, mother don't have occupation, consumed lower yogurt and higher soft drink and snacks, were observed the higher DMFT index. There was no association between BMI and prevalence of dental caries after adjusting for socio-demographic characteristic, oral health behavior, and snack and beverage intake.
Conclusion: Two public health disease, which caries and obesity, had a common cause that consumed snack amount. Thus, public health measures to improve dietary education should decrease the risk of both diseases.
