Due to the fact that our modern life due is already deeply involved in a depressive disposition, pertinent medical diagnoses are required not only to those who are experiencing clinical melancholic symptoms, but also to those who as the majority of people who are used to say that they continually suffer from this pathological problem are excluded from a medical check-up. At this juncture, literary therapy could be an alternative as the working through for fundamental and continual therapeutic effect by transferring normal people into this practice without any negative feelings. My study as the groundwork for this therapeutic journey aims to unravel a depressive disposition with the epic concept in terms of a literary therapeutic analysis : how melancholic symptoms are related to epic characteristics, and to what epic narratives, the symptomatic acts are returned.
In this thesis, I used clinical research methodology in order to accomplish this aim. Primarily, designing literary therapeutic programs by means of folktales, I applied this practice to each analysand who shows melancholic symptoms, and then excerpting epic features from various responses of the participants, I did the special task of re-organizing feedback of every participator's self-epics.
As a result of analysing all the analysand's respondence, they are classified as four epic categories as follows:
The epic of a analysand A, can be condensed like this: in son and daughter epic, the mother did not disown her child; in man and woman epic, the man did not betray his beloved; in husband and wife epic, the former did not abandon the latter; in father and mother epic there is no fault in children. It can be restructured through this analytic observation and investigation that the analysand A, makes a story about which he does not neither forsake nor deceive anybody in all circumstances. Therefore we can assume that he makes narrative that denies relationship rupture.
The epic narrated by the analysand B, can be epitomized as: in a mode of son and daughter epic, mother devoted herself to her children; of man and woman epic, to fall in love with is too foolish; of husband and wife epic, being forsaken from one's own other half by not keeping one's promise; of father and mother epic, children are always with own's parents. Analysing these narrative information, we can suppose that the partaker B, makes continual narrative in terms of relationship in case of both son and daughter and father and mother epic, whereas in either case of man and woman and husband and wife epic, the analysand's description refuses relationship formation of itself or unable to overcome a relation crisis, he/she produces a relation-rupture version.
The epic narrative epitome of other person C, who takes part in this analytic procedure unveils a yarn as follows : in son and daughter epic, mother did not disown her children; in that of man and woman, due to impure and unchaste, one is punished; in that of husband and wife, being forsaken from other half by not keeping one's promise; in that of father and mother, there is no fault in children.
Judging from the study of these discourse levels, the analysand C's narrative can be reorganized like this: the participant C spawns the denying story of relationship fracture in case of both son and daughter epic and father and mother epic, whereas the person constructs a tale to rupture relationship by disallowing relation-formation of itself and by being unable to master this juncture both in man and woman epic.
Through the outcome derived from analysing each analysand's narrative, the epic features involved in a depressive disposition can be selected, and by using these information, we can categorize the symptomatic participants as four groups on the basis of degrees of a depressive disposition. Our findings show as follows:
The epic particularities in the analysand A, overall consist not only of bowdlerizing contents related in feelings of being abandoned in order to unveil deficiency of relationship crisis, but also of compensating that crisis by superseding contents related in abandonment with carefulness and protection.
This is not only derived from son and daughter epic of the analysand A, but also generated between the experienced mother rejected from her son and desire to be cared heartfully from him. Therefore the participator's self epic is regarded as the schema of Konggyi-Potgyi that omitted the Konggyi's revenge plot towards her step-mother.
The characteristics of the analysand B, makes the epic not only of compensating relation crisis by superseding the contents related between son and daughter epic and father and mother epic, but also of enforcing relation crisis by augmenting the story of emphasizing weakness or of poetic justice. This springs from father and mother epic of the partaker B's telling and originates from negative prejudices to females such as daughter and ladies as parents. Therefore, the participator's(B) self epic can be illustrated with Fox's Marbles that narrates a similar story line.
The epic distinction of the analysand C, not only makes narrative of counterpoising relation crisis by replacing the contents related in being abandoned with constituents related in carefulness and protection, but also produce the epic of enforcing relation crisis in both man and woman epic and husband and wife epic by increasing the story of emphasizing weakness and that of poetic justice.
This stems from both son and daughter epic and husband and wife epic, and also derives from desire to fulfill affection that was deficient in childhood from one's parents. And it also springs from negative feelings to the feminine sexuality as a feminine gender. The self epic of the partaker C can be explained from interconnection between the story of Konggyi-Potgyi that omitted the Kongyi's revenge narrative and the forms of Spilt Water.
